Porsche Crest 993 convention

Hi

I just bought my first Porsche 911 on ebay and this have been a huge dream for a long time.

Well the car is a VERY bad build 993 convention and I have troubble finuring out the rear end of the car.

If you look at the picture the rear reflector is wider than the hood and the read lid looks like its cut. I understand from this forum that the 993 lid is different from older models. Any tip om what to do. Could the rear reflector be wrong? does it come in different sizes?

The car is a 1976 model

Thanks!

that is the 993 reflector. Is the engine cover metal or fiberglass?

It is metal. Is it suposed to be wider than the hood?
Here is another pic

I went out and looked at my 993. The line between the reflector and the tail lights is even with the engine cover edge. Looking at the gap between the upper part of the reflector and the engine cover and the reflector and tailights, I would guess that the rear end support structure was not assembled correctly. You probably have your work cut out for you trying to get it square.

Thanks. yes. it does not look nice.. I probably may have to change the lid to a 993 lid. But that wil not fix the width og the rear reflector. I just started to beleve that this is a bad build

A 993 lid isn't going to just "bolt-up" to your "convention". Please post a link to the E-Bay auction!

For your reference, here is a pic of my '79 993 conversion:

1976 993?
It's obviously a 911 conversion to a 993 look that was done poorly.
The lines should all line up.

Welcome to the board, enjoy your new car!

Nice Danny.. I see I have a long way to go but that was actually the plan when I bought the car. I wanted a project car that I could spend some time with in my garasje rather than playing poker on my laptop in the sofa. The 2 hobbies have one thing in common (its expensive).. well here is the link on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180173041596 I fugure I have to take all (bolt on) parts off and fix them but the read lid is my biggest consurn as I don't understand why the width of the rear center reflector is larger than the lower part of the engine lid. Is the 993 lid wider than the older lid?

Thanks

It needs some wider wheels too to fill those fenders...
Strange that they didn't fit a 993 engine lid.
Quite a project to get this thing looking good. You got the parts cheap .
Don't forget to post your progress!

My lid is a 911 lid. A 993 lid (most likely) won't fit your car. You cannot just "unbolt" the parts, as your rear fenders are glassed in. I suspect your rear lights are aftermarket and it appears the builder installed the panels based on the dimensions of those, hence throwing everything else out-of-whack*

In my humble (and far from expert) opinion, your car is not worth fixing (2.7 Sportmatic?). I would try to make it presentable as-is, or part out/flip and buy something in better shape (very doable at the bargain price you got it for). You are going to spend TRUCKLOADS of clams trying to get that car to look right. I paid $12k for my car as you see it (strong running 3.0 with rebuilt tranny) and have spent almost $4k un-doing hack-jobs by the previous owner. I will be upside down for a long time, if not forever...

Ok so you use a 911 lib. I have looked at some kits for 993 and on them it looks like the rear lid is a part of the kit.

About the engine I would not do anything yet as I will focus on the exterior and interior this year and next winter I will bould a new engine. what engine I dont now yet.

And yes I have already bought some new 18" wheels to fit.
Thanks for your help. I will post updates on my progress. Nice to see that there is this many using this forum with good knowledge.

Sorry to be a (continual) downer, but...the wheels you purchased on E-Bay won't fit without massive spacers. The spacers will cost more than the wheels:

Here's mine...

Remember, our cars are still 911's underneath the paint.

Ok I did not know that. I guess I will get more suprises .. Do you know what kind of spacers I need and where to get it? Ebay?
Also. Could I ask you the favour to check the size (width) of your center reflector and the bottom part of your engine lid. Thanks!

The spacer size will depend on the offset of your wheels and the width of your flares. You'll have to mock-up and measure the gap. My (rear) spacers (actually adapters) are a little over 2". Click on the 2nd link above for the Pelican page on spacers.

My car is in my shop. I will be there tomorrow, and if I remember, I'll measure the width of the lid/reflector. Shoot me a PM to remind me.

OK, here are the measurements:

Trailing edge of hood, following curvature = 34 7/8"
Top of reflector, point-to-point (not following curvature) = 35"
Bottom of reflector, point-to-point = 34 1/2"

Is there any chance they cut down your hood to make it narrower? Perhaps they fixed the fenders too closely then realized the hood wouldn't fit...?

Thanks Danny. Same as my reflector but not the hood.

Does anyone now if a 76 911 coupe have a smaller hood than newer 911s

They are definitely not the same size.

Sally,

Welcome and good luck with this!-as others have said, you should really think long and hard as to if this is a worthwhile project.

From the pics, this looks like it really is likely to be a loosing proposition for a lot of reasons. From the looks of the body, you may be looking at removing all of the outer panels, and either re-fitting, replacing, or back-dating to origional components-just to get things lined up. That kind of body work in its self is a huge project, and in the end you will have a 76 911s, -which unfortunately is not seen as a desirable model.

I think all of us reading this just don't want to see someone waste their $ on a really tough project like this.
