87 Brake Pad styles

I am replacing the brake pads on a 1987 Carerra Targa and need clarification on pad styles. Apparently there are 2 types of pad for this yr, a notch style and a glue on style for the wear sensor. Before I order the wrong pad, could someone please confirm if the picture attached is the glue on style. There is a small diameter hole in the top of the pad into which the sensor plugs in.



Also, the guy who owned the car previously used some type of adhesive on the pad and they are really stuck to the calipers. Any suggestions on removing them with the least possibility of damage to the caliper. Is it safe to stick a small putty knife in thru the back side of the pad to break the adhesive loose?

Mine look different. They have a "U" shaped / half moon cut out in the top of the pad backing plate. I think yours are the glue in type.

Yes a putty knife is safe. The caliper is a pretty solid hunk of metal so your not going to damage it by prying against it. I have the U shaped cutouts like Jeff described on my 87. I've never seen this glue in kind. Finally, the sensor pads are delicate and break easy. I don't even hook mine up and tie wrap them back against a hard brake line or something secure. I have my wheels off enough to check the pad wear without the sensors.

are you sure you arent talking about bonded versus riveted?....This I have heard of....but never heard of glue in brake pads....on any type of car.....bonded pads are "glued" to the backing plate versus riveted....

The pads you pictured are the glue-in type. Meaning that the sensors are glued into the pads. NOT the pads glued to the pistons and dust boots! The factory pads are superceded to this type of pad. You can still get the "U" shaped sensor type pads though. The only difference is the sensors themselves.
Yes, a putty knife (used carefully) will work. I hate that when people glue the pads in. All it ends up doing is ruining the dust boots for the next guy (like you) that has to do a pad replacement.

I just use 3M weather strip adhesive in a tube. Seems to do the trick.
