Post Dash Install Early 911

Does anyone have experience installing a dash in an older (72T) 911? I have heard that you do not need to remove the windshield. Any info would be helpful.

Thanks.

I guess it's possible, but easier with the windshield out. If you're doing the labor, go for it. If you're paying someone, calculate the $60-$100 to R&R the glass, then compare with the extra time/hassle it'll take with the windshield in place.

You may also find that your windshield is clouded/sandblasted/chipped if it is as old as the car (or even if not)...now would be a perfect time to think about a replacement.

. . . add in the cost of a replacement seal for the windshield. If your old one is as old as the car it probably won't be usable.

...and the bright trim around the windshield

...and the good possibility that there may be some cancer (rust) hiding under that windshield seal

it never ends, does it

Be careful with the windshield. I understand they get more brittle as they get older.

I replaced my cracked '81 dash with this used '86. In order to remove the old one, I had to remove my windshield due to the screws holding the edge down. The '86 did not have the same screws. I paid approximately $50 to have a professional re-install my WS. Be sure to buy a new seal.

Looks like a tight squeeze, but from the posted pic it appears that a right angle manual screw driver and a little patience would allow the dash to be removed without windshield removal...

Is this possible? I am curious.

I need to get a new dash on my 73, but I plan to do this when I get it painted, so my windows are coming out and new seals are going back in.

My understanding is that the older style dash can be installed by pulling out the Tach and getting to the screws (6mm I'm told)

I really don't want to remove the windshield. It's not leaking now and I don't want to spend the money on the new seals.

Hi Ian,
I have a 72' and yes you can replace the dash without removing the windshield.
The dash is held in place by 7 nylon snap connectors that run along the back edge by the windshield. It is also held in front by 4 nuts that go thru the metal dash frame, 2 that go thru the frame above the tach and 1 more that goes thru the dash frame next to the drivers door. The harder part is getting to the 4 nuts that I previously mentioned. You may have to remove the dash speaker (if you still have one) That will make access to 2 of the nuts much easier. The others you can get to from inside the trunk. The nylon snaps are a little tough getting out but since you replacing the dash you don't have to worry about tearing up the old. If you don't get new snaps with your dash then go and buy some because most of the old ones will break when you remove the old dash.
There the same snaps as the ones used for the door panels.
Good Luck
Bobby

The front "flap" (it is the feature that is most towards the front of the car, around 1/2 inch thick) sits right under the windshield rubber seal has screws that hold it down that think you can only get to by removing the windshield). I suppose you could install without the screws, or even cut off the flap, but it would not be the same.

Oops Carlo is right. My coupe didn't have the screws. Must of been a replacement. I pulled the dash out of the targa and didn' t notice the screws. They're hard to see with the windshield in. But they seem to be cosmetic more than structural.
