Rattling Sound with Clutch Engaged

Hello,

I've got an '88 Carrera and I hear a rattling sound with the car at idle in neutral with the clutch engaged. The sound definitely goes away when the clutch pedal is depressed. The car has ~76k miles on it and I do not know its maintenance history prior to 2001 (when I purchased it). I've not had any clutch related repairs done since I've owned the car.

I'm assuming this is the throwout bearing, but I don't really know for sure. Thought I would throw this out there to get some educated comments. Is this something that I should have investigated immediately by a qualified mechanic? Is this something that could leave me stranded requiring emergency towing service?

Any educated comments/advice are welcomed.

Thanks,

Bill

Mine too (89)..

Depressed: goes away,....

All the way out; slight rattle..

I've read where the TPB would possibly be the case on the 2nd case, but not the first (tranny bearings (maybe)..

I'm sure the pros will chime in here soon...

Best of luck,

+1
You should have heard the Vette transaxles rattle when up on a lift. You'd think there were gnomes inside with sledgehammers.

John,

Out of all I've read from many of you knowlegeable people,........the G50 rattle seems to be related to vibrating shift mechanisms (shifter article, in point "Rattle Trap") or lugging the engine a bit (synchro rattle?)..

When it comes to noises relating to clutch in, clutch out,..NOW, we're talking something completely different...? Or are we?

,../..did I understand the information wrongly....

Please set me straight...as I'm under the impression that the clutch/tranny is making my noise (maybe normally so,...as you're saying?)

Thanks much,.....

Best

Spring-centered clutch?

I'm no expert, but my '88's spring centered clutch rattles quite a bit.....is that what's in yours?

Well, since I've never seen it, I don't know for sure. I have no reason to think it would be otherwise, however.

Do you experience the same thing? Rattle goes away when you depress the clutch? Or no?

Thanks,

Bill

I don't even know what's in mine...I do know when I dropped by the PO's wrench to have a conversation with him (about the rebuild, as well), I did ask him about the noise that was there (slight) ith the clutch OUT and how it went away with clutch IN,..he said no worries (what JW said).....that's to say, it's normal for the spring centered clutches???...yet I heard a few who were dead silent with clutch out...

You know, there are several takes on this, all learned and experienced by the pros. I guess this (me) laymen has something to learn as to the EXACT sounds that we speak of,...as they are obviously a bit different, representative of various parts of the tranny (or shifter).

I find this very neat, in that I'm an audio engineer, very astute to sounds,...just now, I'll have to learn how to correlate to mechanicals!!!!!!!!!

I can say this: on a very cold morning recently,...my clutch out sound was quite prominent (I would say semi troubling) and eventually leveled out to normal chatter when warm.....

Only one way to find out, I guess.

my G50 rattles...for some reason I didn't notice it before the top end rebuild and change to spring clutch - it may have been there...but I think it was less or I would have remembered...on the track I don't notice the rattle :-)
