Triangle of death
I am working in the "Triangle" and am installing the Case Breather Gasket.
Is this installed dry or do you apply sealant as well ? ![]() I have discovered that I have an oil leak in this area but do not know which component is the culprit or if they are all contributing. ![]()

I used the best sealant I could find.
Cleaned both surfaces with acetone and clamped it down gently. Come to think of it, i don't think I used the gasket...

I installed mine dry on two different engines ... you might want to cut two inches off the bottom of the breather hose as it hardens at the clamp area and has a tendency to crack eventually and replace your oil sender switch while you're there !

Breather Gasket ….Dry or Sealant ?
I was wondering since this area is such a problem are people using a Pematex like sealant on both sides of the gasket

Phil's point was good. I usually find it's the breather hose that does the most damage/leaking. If the hose appears at all hard ,replace it. Clean all surfaces well. Use a small amount of gasket sealant on both sides of the breather gasket. Repeat small amount. Good luck

A bit of Curil T on the gasket won't hurt, but yeah, if the surfaces are clean, it should be fine dry.

Breather Hose
I purchased the lower oil breather hose from Pelican and they sent a braided fabric hose.
Is this the correct hose or should it be rubber ? I have seen both used just wondering if their is a difference. I also purchased the top hose that also goes to the oil tank neck and this one is rubber.

I replaced the breather hose with a braided fabric one when i installed the 3.6 in my car,it's probably cheaper to replace as it's a generic 1 inch heater hose which will do just fine !
Cheers Phil

I have just dealt with this I installed mine dry but did sand down the very rough sealing surface that was on my cover first.
I think my biggest leak was from the thermostat o- ring failing. The thermostat came right off but made a suction noise and was much tighter when re installing with a new o-ring. Cheers Bill

Oil leak prevention oil breather gasket
I think after inspecting the area the most likely culprit was the O-Ring on the Thermostat.
I do not want to be doing this again anytime soon so I would like to make sure the breather does not leak. I guess I should replace the oil cooler rubber seals as well while I have the engine partially dropped and the CIS removed. ( I thought I was in the assembly mode but now I might have to regroup and get these seals installed) Has anyone removed the oil cooler with the engine in car ?

Dry is fine. Remember guys, our engines are now close to 30 years old, and god only knows how old the current gasket is. So by replacing these three items, you will be light-years ahead as far as leakege is concerned. I did mine last year, and my engine is dry as a bone.

Dry ... no issues .. check those bushings on the throttle linkage while you have it out ..

isn't there supposed to be a difference between the green o-ring and the red o-ring for the thermostat? IIRC, a lot of members were recommending one over the other due to leakage issues.

O Ring on T Stat
I read the same thing about the Red -Ring so put the green one in and I also put new bushings in the throttle lever.

Also, does anybody recall someone's hint to coat the new pressure switch with some kind of sealant?

Another tip for this is to make sure the breather is straight before reinstalling, place a piece of fine sand paper on a flat surface and run the breather over it and make sure it has no dips and valleys, sand it down until its completely flat to ensure a nice sealing surface, than no need for sealant.

Sand the breather cover with Silicon Carbide wet/dry sandpaper in the 200 range on a piece of 1/4" glass, or the top of a cast iron table saw. Wet paper with WD40 and sand in a circular motion. Do this until the whole mating surface is flat with new metal showing.
