Tire sieze vs wheel wisdth

Can someone please confirm the largest recommended tire size for my 8X16 Fuchs rear wheel.

Is there a general rule (or website) that outlines the largest recommended tire size vs. wheel width?

All of the tire manufacturers have a website that lists their tires specs including recommended wheel width. TireRack also has that info

For instance a Yok AVS Sport 245/45x16 can be used on a 7.5" - 9" wheel, when mounted on an 8" wheel the tire cross section will be 9.7"

A wider wheel will stretch the cross section more and lower the rolling radius a tad, a smaller less, rule of thumb ~.2" cross section width for an extra .5" of wheel width

The wider the wheel the better the performance, the narrower the wheel the more comfortable
