1988 911 Whale Tail.

I am looking at buying a 1988 911 that has a whale tail spoiler on the rear. I don't really care for the spoiler and would like to remove it but I'm not sure if I would have to replace the deck lid.
can anybody help?
I figure that if the guys here don't know, nobody does!

thank you.

Yes, there are mounting holes in the lid for the tail. You'll either have to have them filled and painted, or get another lid of the same color,

I would replace the current deck lid but keep it you may want to do track days and then want a whale tail. If you decide that you don't need it then offer it up for sale on this forum. I would also try to get the replacement deck lid in the color that your car is now to save a few bucks on painting then it is a quick replacement.

some also suggest that if you track the car with tail off then you should also take off the front lip.... they work together - might as well have all 4 wheels lifting off the ground the same amount :-) same would hold if you plan and driving say over 90mph on the street...there are other threads on this, a search should turn up more details

I think the conventional wisdom is that spoiler but no tail is OK, but tail with no spoiler is not?

I have the spoiler but ditched the tail and rear windshield washer to save 25 lbs...
