Look what I found
![]() ![]() ![]() So now it looks like I have to replace a broken head stud. The car ran o/k before I removed the engine. There was no evidence of an exhaust leak. I also track the car. If I find only one broken stud should I bother to tear the motor apart? I know that is a stupid question. Any opinion will be greatly appreciated. Brian

Sorry to hear that Brian, though I'm expecting to see more than one
![]() I'm thinking I hear what I think is an exhaust leak. I've done quite a bit of searching regarding this... not quite a consensus but some think you can drive for a while like this. I'm wondering if I've not gone for a while with one broken and not noticing and now its gotten worse. Good luck. Jay

Not a stupid question. If the rest of your headstuds are ok you can probably drive a while without worry. Lots of guys on this board have done so.

I don't track my car, but I know I have two broken head studs...which are going to be fixed very shortly now. But I've run my car probably 1k miles knowing that they were broken (two different cylinders) with no problems. A mechanic I took it to said he didn't notice any leaking, but he didn't really do a thorough study of them either.

I found 2 broken ones on my 80SC. I ended up pulling the engine and replacing all 12 lower dilivar studs with steel ones. I did not do any machine work, studs, gaskets and laced her back up. I did it in 2002 when the engine had 107,000 miles on it. I've got around 128, 000 miles on her now. It cost around $350 in parts, I was able to do the work myself. The engine didn't need to be rebuilt so I just repaired what was broken. I remember feeling pretty lousy when I found mine. Good Luck!

with a broken stud, end heads will flap more than center heads. when they flap, once every firing stroke, they beat on the cylinder top. both parts are aluminum. think soft metal.

Thanks for everyone's input.
I removed the valve covers today. All the studs are fine except for the one broken one that I found. I had the motor re-built in 99. The engine runs very well and doesn't burn any oil. To be on the safe side I think I will replace the studs.
