Rear Fenders' Depth not Even, A Possible Fix?

Gentlemen.

Question, can I put a shorter spacer or stack less spacers on one side of the rear wheels to make the fenders depth even or close to it? Trying to lower it again without grinding the fenders with the tires.

Issue: since our P-cars are hand made my rear fenders are not the same depth. It is not accident related. Mine is 3/4" shallower on the left side.

Possible Solution: shorter spacer or stack spacers with let say 1 less 1/4"-1/2" spacer to even out the wheel depth in the fender.

More Importantly will this mod effect performance i.e. alignment or any other adverse effects?

TIA

Do you have time to bring it by shop, I can take a look at it, and see what options we have.

I have read about this more than once on this board, and also talked about this with Rudy before. I think it's the master piece of "hand made" about our car. I do have this "problem" too.

As long as it clears the inner portion of the wheel well and no performance issues, it makes sense, doesn't it?

Right now it bothers the loving poop out of me to see the left wheel hang out so much compared to the rigtht side, not to mention bottoming out the fender and worse yet cutting the side wall of my very expensive tires.

I just can't accept this as an excepted flaw of our P-cars!

I hope this can be a simple non adverse fix.

I have run uneven spacing (1/2") on the rear of my car for 10 years with no issues.
This is a turbo with 13" wide tires and 325+ ft/lb torque to the ground. Auto-X, Driver's Ed, miles of mountain roads and 150mph runs several times a year. No problems with bearings and no handling issues that I can tell.

On my 78 it was the left front that was out a bit further, something I didn't notice until I went to 7" wheels. On my 70T it is the right rear that's out. I run a spacer on the left.

Great Gentlemen Thank You! Heading out to AXIOM

A Thousand Thanks to RUDY at AXIOM!!!

Update: I have no spacers Front or Rears

Rudy at AXIOM in INGLEWOOD, CA took some valuable time out of his very busy schedule to help a fellow Peilcan. He properly checked the measurements on both rear fenders from the bottom of the rear window down the center of the center cap.

Result: Only a bit over 1/8" inch difference, shorter on the driver side.

:confused::eek: Very Glad that is was not what I thought when I measured from the inside of the fenders ( the wrong way ).

We both noticed that driver side appears to be perpendicular to the road where as the passenger side is "cambered inward at top about a 1/4" of an inch under the fender. (Rudy, I verified on a level surface at the gas station)

Passenger Side:

Rudy even gave me a 1/4" spacer to try but I trully believe now that I need to have both the passenger side camber adjusted and realign the whole car.

Am I to assume that change in the passenger side rear camber will require and new alignment as per Bentley?

Now should I Camber in the top portion of the Driver Rear Wheel and Camber out the top portion of the Passenger Rear Wheel?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

AGAIN THANK YOU RUDY! You the Body Man!

I doubt anyone can answer that without getting the current alignment specs for both sides...in addition to how you drive the car.

I'm with you. An 1/8th of an inch difference would bother me too!

Mostly Daily Driver, Fun Runs and planing on Track (Pre-Novice, left hand always out to pass, not in any hurry :D ) 3 - 4 times a year.

Per Alignment Report just rear readings:

Rear:
Camber Left -1.3* (Initial) -1.2* Min -0.8* Max -1.2* (Final)
Camber Right -1.4* (Initial) -1.2* Min -0.8* Max -1.3* (Final)

Toe Left 1/16" (Initial) 1/32" Min 1/8" Max 1/16"(Final)
Toe Right 1/16" (Initial) 1/32" Min 1/8" Max 1/16"(Final)

right now, your passenger side has more -camber. When you sit in, the driver side will have a little more -camber then the passenger side. Don't know if that equal out but maybe it will be diff., better
