'74 Engine Rebuild
Group
Does anyone know a reliable person here in Iowa that can handle a stock 2.7 engine rebuild? My engine leaks a lot of oil from just about every point because it sat for fifteen years (only 25,000 original miles). Actually the compression is great and the engine runs fine but I have just about had it with all the leaks. Let me know who you know and how I can contact them. I looking for someone reliable and no B/S. Please send me a PM or an email. Thanks for your help; Ventana

Ventana,
I don't know anyone in Iowa, but Tab Tanner (Autobahn Garage) in Findlay, OH is an excellent mechanic and knows his way around 911 engines! If you can't find anyone local, you could send the engine on a pallet to him and have him rebuild it for you. Shipping an engine isn't that bad, I had one shipped to me via Yellow Freight from AZ to MI and it was about $300, as I recall...

Since Drew Gangle closed Bruch motorwerks in Adel, I don't think there is anyone in Iowa.

Thanks
Art;
Thanks for the fast reply. How's the Mid9 Forum going? Did it ever come back to life? Do you happen to have Tab's phone number? Has Tab helped you with Helga? How's his turn around time? If push came to shove I could pull the engine, stick it in the bed of my Ford and make a trip to Ohio. Engine repair is always a great excuse for a road trip. Hope Helga is still "your woman". Right now Sugar Magnolia is close to divorce court. No matter what I do I can't get her to quit leaking oil. As soon as I stop one another puddle shows up. Now the case line is leaking and that is way beyond my skill level. What I don't know is if it would be less expensive to have someone split the case, redo all of the seals and just put the existing P&C's back in with an update to the later valve guides or find another, low mileage engine like you did. I'll keep you posted. Despite the oil leaks Suger Mag still runs like the sweet little whore she is. Later; Ventana

Dean;
Yes, you are right. I called the number on the side of the building last year and got no answer. That's why I posted. I have not found anyone in Iowa that will even talk to me about fixing the engine in my 911. It is way sad living in Iowa and owning a Porsche if you need repair. Thanks; Ventana

25,000 miles.....Wow. Must be in great shape (besides all the leaks). How did you come across a car that has sat for so long? Any pics? I've got a soft spot for '74 911's. Love to hear about it.
Have you thought about rebuilding it yourself? I'm rebuilding the motor on my '74 right now. I'd be happy to talk to you about it. You can send me a PM if you'd like.

Fidalgo;
Go to this thread and scroll down to about mid page. There are pics of my '74 with the reason why it still only has 25,000 original miles on it. I have considered doing he work myself the only issue for me is time. I have my own consulting business and I when I am busy it is all I do. Thanks; Ventana Post pics of your Mid9 ('74-'77)

Ventana,
Here's is Tab's phone number and address: 419-957-7210 Call 642 Rockwell Findlay OH 45840 He got Helga up and running and found several problems (derelict burglar alarm shorting out the ignition and fuel pump circuits, failed fuel distributor, etc...) I swapped engines and took it to Tab and he replaced the "CIS from hell" with Webers and I love the car now! I drove from MI to FL and back last March (3600 miles) and then put about another 5000 miles on the car last summer and enjoyed every one of them! I couldn't own my car with Tab and this forum! The Mid9 forum doesn't seem to gather enough interest or response, so I don't hang out there, but I wish those guys well and hope the board can stay alive. Tab works best if he's not rushed, but talk to him about the engine, what your schedule is like and I'm sure you guys can work something out. I won't let anyone but Tab work on my car!

Ventana,
I have some CIS parts left over if you need any... (intake runners, fuel lines, misc parts and a CIS fuel pump, to name a few).
