Ok, I own a copy of BAs performance Handbook, the four volume Factory manual set, Haynes manual, and the Bentley Carrera service manual as well as a Factory spec. book for my SC.
I just want to point out to anyone considering an engine rebuild that all of the afore mentioned books have useful info, but not all have the same information. For example, the haynes manual says to ensure that all piston wrist pin cir-clips are facing the crankshaft upon assembly. No other book I have mentions this. The bentley manual says to ensure that the outer valve springs are installed with the tighter coils against the clyinder head. There are several, several inconsistancies between the books I have and reading all of them has really been a help. 6 months ago I would never have thought that today I'd be seriously contemplating rebuilding this motor myself without the help of my mechanic. But after reading, rereading and disassembling my motor first hand, I have gained new confidance and a much, much better understanding of how my motor works. I really think I can do it. (well, with your help anyway) One quick question, in the Factory spec book and the Bentley manual the diagram for checking the wear on the layshaft shows a couple 4.5mm. dowel rods being incerted 180 deg apart and a measurement being taken. Bruce andersons book shows a measurement being taken with a dial gauge indicator. Is this the same measurement taken two different ways? Thanks for any tips, hell...I'm even starting to understand the whole idea of cam timing now. ![]() ------------------ Leland Pate ___'99 Dodge Dakota <-which pulls the "real" car ___'79 SC Targa Which hopefully will be back together soon... |

Leland,
The dowel measurement is for checking wear of the intermediate shaft gear and its' mate on the crankshaft ... to see if they are worn out and need to be replaced. The dial indicator measurement is for end play, and is used to calculate the number of paper gaskets to be used to keep end play within spec. after you put the cover over the end. Obviously, you want to know the shaft/gears aren't worn out before putting it in the case and buttoning things up! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

AH HA!!!!!
Now it makes sense! Thank you so much Warren. I knew I was missing something there. Now the only deal is the fact that my Haynes manual shows the end play measurement being taken with a depth gauge resting on the intermediate shaft cover, and in the Perf. Handbook BA shows it being taken with a Dial Indicator! Confusing to say the least! well now I can go and reread everything again. thanks, Warren! |
