Occasionally stalls at idle when fully warmed up. Once it stalls it won't restart until it cools down to first mark on temperature gage, in 45 min. - 1 hour. Yesterday, it stalled under normal driving, and I thought I smelled fuel before it stopped. Any ideas on where to start looking?
Over the past two years I have done normal maintenance and replaced fuel pump (old one died), and fuel accumulator. About a month ago I also replaced spark plug wire connectors (4 out of 6 of the old ones were bad). |

If you can duplicate the problem at home I would check to see if you have spark and fuel. Then go into the more indepth diagnostics, like checking for correct fuel pressure, check to see if your cold start valve is leaking. Check to make sure the auxiliary air regulator is not faulty, check for vacuum leaks. Check that the fuel distributor is working properly aswell as the control plunger, make sure it is not binding. Buy a good book on Bosch fuel injection systems to help aid you in hunting down the problem. If you do plan to do the work yourself you will need some specialized tools too. This should give you an idea of where to start or atleast you will understand what the mechanic is talking about....Hope this helps..TargaEuro

When CIS cars have poor hot starting, it's usually because fuel pressure has leaked out of the system. The check valve on the fuel pump and the fuel accumulator are the two best suspects.
Dunno why it might stall. Do you hear fuel pump noises from under the front of the car? ------------------ '83 SC |

I'm interested to hear your solution. I have a similar problem with my 82SC. Same situation.

This happend to me the other day. I was driving for about 2hrs straight. Then stopped for 20min. When I tried to start, she would not fire. I went up front and pulled out the fuel pump relay, tapped it a few times, giggled it some more, and then tried again. Then she fired up.
Next time this happens to me I will place the key in the "run" position. Then remove the air filter and push up the mixture plate in the CIS mixture adjustment unit. The fuel pump should come on. If it doesn't then the relay must be the problem. Tony '78 911SC |

I would check the fuel pump relay too before digging deep into the fuel injection system. I didnt think of that...thanks tbitz...TargaEuro

do cis cars have a head temp sensor? if so, it sounds like symptoms of one possibly going bad.

until the check valve is replaced, to help these cars start hot, turn on the key, pull the air filter off and reach in and raise the sensor plate arm until you hear the injectors squeeking. this sprays the injectors and the car will start now. not too much though, or you may flood it.
