What was the first year for a cup holder?
Not that I want one, but I'm curious when the first 911 to have a factory cup holder was released?
Thanks, chris

1999 if I remember correctly, as the 996 has cupholders from the factory. In older 911's I always put drinks between the door handle and speaker in the map pocket. Or a passenger works great as a cup holder.

Not all 996's have cup holders, I believe 2001 was the first year for both Boxsters and 996's.

In Europe eating and drinking in the car is considered to be in poor taste. At autobahn speeds the last thing you want to be doing is sucking on a Big Gulp. Cup holders are an American thing. We eat and drink in our cars because we are too busy to stop and enjoy a leisurely meal in a good restaurant as the Europeans do.
California has a new cellphone law as do many other States that makes it illegal to talk on a cell phone while driving. I find it just as distracting to eat and drink while driving as to talk on the telephone. Personally I am glad our older 911,s have no cup holders.

I'll second that last post... who wants a cup holder in a sports car that can do over 150mph and 0-60 in under 4 or 5 sec's ? ....save the cup holder and all the other pleasantries for the family car/suv.

![]() A law against talking in a cellphone is silly, sure, it's distracting but so is talking with the passengers and that's not illegal.

I'm sure you have better drivers in Sweden than we do in California. It has become very dangerous to drive around here with people distracted by cell phones. The law will prohibit their use unless they are hands free. If you ever drive a San Francisco bay area freeway stay on your toes. Many of the drivers around here don't even have a license or insurance.

I'm not arguing against that it is dangerous to talk, the stupid thing is that the distracting part is the conversation, not holding the phone in the hand. We don't have a law against cellphones in Sweden, yet, but several European countries have.

Actually, that turns out not to be true. Studies are quite clear in showing a huge deficit in driver attention when using a cell phone - the hands free type included. It is not clear exactly why that is, but it is about as dangerous as driving drunk.

Friends:
Cupholders are inventions of the devil. As the bandito said in Treasure of the Sierra Madre, "We don't need no steenkeen' cupholders!" My early 912 has no cupholders, no radio, no phone, no CD player, no AC, no heater blower, no heater (almost), no power windows, no power seats, no catalytic converters, no cruise control, no power mirrors, no energy-absorbing bumpers, no power door locks, almost no carpet (rubber mats instead), and almost no power. But at 2,050 lb, it sure is fun to drive! Frank |

You guys bemoaning cup holders must not drive your 911 more than 20 miles or so at a time. Not sure about the rest of you but I drive mine on long cross country trips and it is nice to have something to drink in the car.

I kinda wanna put one in the 930. We usually end up leaving the track for food, which means a quick run to some fast food drive-through, and it's a pain to hold on to a drink while driving back. The map pocket was excellent for this, but ever since I switched to RS carpet/door panels, there really is no place to rest a drink.
I think the cup holder "issue" is over-hyped. I don't think putting one in a track-prepped 911/930 with race seats, harnesses, roll bar, R-comps etc suddenly transforms the car into your neighborhood soccermom's taxi. Especially if the cup holder is removable... It's not like you HAVE to drink while running 0-60 times & top speed efforts! Sometimes, it's nice to not spill your drink in the interior... ![]() And, oh yeah, most people casuing havok on my drive home are usually yapping on the cell.

I use one of these removable jobs that fit onto the passenger seat track. Yes, it is too expensive, but it really is nicely made, and it saves my carpet or map pockets from coffee stains. No association, just my contribution to the thread.

I just carry a plastic bottle Coke or water with a top on it. Pretty novel idea huh?
