I have an '85. Warren suggested I remove, clean, repack w/ swepco Grease and replace my steering rack.
Any suggestions, or pitfalls to look out for when I do this? BTW: The reasoning is due to it "clicking" when I slightly move the wheel left and right. I have found the rack inside of its housing clicks when I move it forward and aft relative to the car. I have upgraded to Turbo Tie-rods. If this doesn't work, I will buy a rebuilt unit. Oops wrong topic
Sorry, I thought you were asking about the steering column until I reread your post. Kevin 87 Carrera [This message has been edited by KTL (edited 04-11-2001).] |

Nick,
I did my R&R as part of therTurbo tie-rod upgrade and don't recall any special problems. It may make things a little easier if you detach the tie rods from the spindle arms and leave them attached to the rack. That would be my suggestion -- to start that way, anyway! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

Nick:
I have an '85 Carrera, and heard the same clicking last summer. Tracked it down to the locking nuts on the tie rods... the people who did the alignment on it didn't tighten them enough & there was a bit of play right at the nuts that you could feel when a helper turned the steering wheel. May want to check it out. Let me know how the project goes. I'd like to consider repacking my rack if it's not too much of a problem. regards, jlex. |

Jlex,
I wish it was that. I checked over my rack when I upgraded the turbo tie-rods. Witht the tie-rods OFF, I was able to push on the metal bar (the one that slided left and right) forward and aft of the car and I hear the click. I checked the rack and made sure it was bolted tightly to the frame. I checked the steering input shaft. Then I hoped it would be the Tie-rods and replaced those. I Hope Warren is right, I am not too interested in purchasing a Rack. Anyone else with info? It seems like a tight fit, at best. I see a big problem with either brake lines, or A/C lines. I am looking to remove the Tierods off of the rack, as I do not want to use a tie-rod tool (I only have a fork), on my new tie-rods. Bessides, it looks to be easier romoval with the tie-rods off.
