This is an interesting thread that reinforces the old adage that the value of a specialty vehicle is "what someone is willing to pay for it".

Clones, tributes, backdates - whatever you want to call them -have a very small niche market, plus they are usually built to the builder's, not the buyer's taste.

I've never officially had this one that my brother and I backdated a couple years ago up for sale but I've received a few inquiries regarding selling it and for how much. A lot of time and dollars went into this project that was done in my garage/workshop at home, the only outsourcing being having the rear flares professionally butt-welded and having the Recaro SE's reupholstered to match the dark blue interior.

To those who inquired, I had priced the car in the $27K - $30K range which is more than $15K below the $45+K that has been invested in the car over the years which includes new head studs and a top end overhaul, not just the bodywork and paint. But understand that my RS 3.0 backdate still has a 100% stock 1987 chassis and powertrain aside from the larger wheels & tires. We aren't racers and wanted the "look" but with stock 3.2 Carrera reliability.

In the meantime, I have decided to keep the car for the time being although there is a certain 997 GT3 owned by a good friend that will become available in the near future that is calling my name. I currently have a serious buyer in the event that the GT3 opportunity materializes. I have a couple other vehicles I'll need to sell to make that happen and the thought of selling this fully sorted 911 has caused some serious soul-searching on my part.

The laughable (to me) thing is that all but one potential buyer ran like the wind when I mentioned that the air conditioning had been deleted! Oh, NO!!

With all that said, my point is that one of these modded Porsches is worth whatever a buyer is willing to pay. And the European buyers are snapping up more nice USA Porsches these days than you might imagine. My previous 33K mile M491 cab now happily lives in Rüsselsheim, Germany.

Part of the driving force on prices is relative to what it costs a professional shop to build. If you ask TRE to build your dream RSR with 3.6, LSD, turbo brakes, chassis reinforcements and nice paint, I'm quite sure it is well over $100k.

If you can buy someone's car with light use and live with or better yet love their decisions for $60k or $70k, you've got yourself a bargain.

Though buyers aren't on every street corner. I stumbled across a buyer who loves Porsches, had about a dozen before, appreciates the car for what it is and who was willing to pay what I thought a very fair price. When I say stumbled, I mean literally ...... I met him at Cars n Coffee in Irvine one Saturday morning and came over and discussed my car. He seems extremely happy..... it is an awesome car, built as well as i possibly could have built it. As part of a PPI Aase Motors gave the car its blessing, too. Jeff said he loved how the car drove. Warm leak down was 4% to 6% with about 13.5k miles from a reputable builder.

Personally, I think Kermee could sell into the 80s or more with the right buyer. I think that red 3.8L RSR from PNW that Jeff built sold for more than $100k, according to the buyer.

The green is very hot right now and the right buyer might likely appreciate the engine and trans mods.

I recently talked to Paul @ autokennel in Orange County who validated my thoughts on price. He was very straightforward. Might be worth talking to him. Or just bring it down to the Orange County cars and coffee when you are ready to sell.

On a side note, with my car, I think I gained a bit of credence / pedigree that it was featured in Excellence. I'm grateful to Pete Stout and to Zach Mayne.

cheers,

Doug

Here's another data point fresh from an Ebay sale.
Pretty good money at $75k.
Not crazy about the mufflers, but the rest is ok.
