| rear license lighting?
Having entirely removed the huge rubber bumper overrides form the rear of my '83 SC (it'll never be parallel-parked), I'm left without lighting for the rear license plate. Has anybody solved this problem cleanly, without requiring too much drilling and altering of the bumper itself? There are plenty of grubby plastic $1.98 made-in-Mexico license lights intended for trailers and the like available at AutoZone-type stores, but I don't particularly want to do that. The Performance Products catalogue shows an illuminated license-plate frame, which would be perfect, but they've had my order for two months now and apaprently are permanantly backordered. Anybody know of another source for either an illuminated frame (which will doubtless be a cheapjack part but won't require any drilling) or quality lamps that could be affixed to the bumper permanantly and not make the thing look like a boat trailer? Steve, Heres a pic of my f/g rear bumper, the licence lights came from a salvage yard, Nissan?, Toyota Corolla?, something like that. I also have the performance Products lighted license frame, never used, if you are interested. Many of the Connecticut valley PCA ers use BMW 2002 pieces.

Do you have a reflectorized plate (or is the paint on the plate just regular paint?) I had the same dilemma once, but our state uses reflectorized plates, so I just took a chance and used no lighting at all. Drove it for many, many years, and never got a ticket! If you think you really need the lighting, I like the "light on the frame" idea. Someone else must have that in stock! Pep Boys? Just seems a lot cleaner than drilling into the bumper.

Thanks for the offer, Bill. I just called Performance and they coincidentally had just, finally, shipped the license-plate frame. After all, I need it just to pass New York inspection, not because I think it's crucial to have a lit-up license plate. Stephan

Ever looked at how the rear plate is illuminated in the early 911 models? Food for thought. The iluminated frame might be the easier answer, though.
