Who has the most useful unusual reuse of old parts?

I just replaced my front rotors again. As I was preparing to take the old rotors to the dump, I started thinking about creative reuse of the old rotors. Stack them as jack stands? Bird bath? Two together as wall mounted cord/hose storage?
I have an use 911 piston which has three valves welding on which is a great cigar holder. This was given to me by Jane Bennett.
Any other ideas for these and other things?

I used to have a broken 911 tach on my desk at the office which I used to indicate the current level of "business". Low RPMs, low transactions; high RPMs to redline, well, you get the picture. My office had all sorts of neat car stuff and diecasts anyway, so this fit right in.

A friend who owns a machine shop made a christmas tree base out of a brake rotor. incredible amount of hours and high craftsmanship. i'll have to find a picture.

I heard that F. Vincent Zappa used the DME & fuel system from a Carrera in his electric cooled pony harness for his new car...

Not sure my wife would appreciate the lamp. Not quite queen ann or early american.

It's so pretty :*).

I've got an old 15" Indy Car slick that my son uses as a night stand.
One of my NLA 9x15 Fuchs is now a hose reel. If they ever start making decent sized tires again it'll go back on the car.

You can make a cool desklamp out of 928 headlights too.

JackMan 02-17-2008 12:21 PM

I have a string of rotors that I use for a boat anchor.

If you recall the Barry Bennett restoration project, Barry's widow Jane gave me this cigar holder a few years back. Three old valves and an old piston head. Pretty creative. I was considering cleaning it up in the sandblaster but it has history just as it is. Works great too. Thanks Barry. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1203702980.jpg

Base for a halogen work lamp made from an old rotor.

PCA7GGR 02-22-2008 09:19 AM

The ever popular Fuchs hose reel. I got it from EASY years ago - the inside is marked "NFG" ("No F@#king Good") - badly warped.

I've got a short stack of brake rotors I'm using as a storage stand for my rebuilt 915. The bellhousing fits on the flat of the rotor nicely, and the mainshaft sticks down in the center hole without resting on the ground.

JFairman 02-22-2008 09:47 AM

I've seen guys at car shops weld approx 6 foot lengths of 2" pipe with a "Y" on top onto old rotors and use them as support stands to hold up front engine cars exhaust systems while the car is up on a lift and the mechanic is standing under the car welding the exhaust sytem together.
The rotor is the base for the stand.

I use old rotors to teach the six-year-old how to catch a frisbee. He needs a bit of toughening up.

Now I need to find some smaller Porsche parts to fix his teeth.

Used front rotor holds a 3-wick candle very well. Although I haven't lit the candle in about 3 years, so it just takes up room on the coffee table. Maybe time to find a different use.

911 Garage... Paper Towel Holder

Here's my paper towel holder.

I throw one into the bottom of a planter when I re-plant a big plant like a ficus tree. Helps keep them from blowing over in the wind

Chris Lovell 02-26-2008 01:32 PM

Al,
Great paper towel holder. What part is that? I don't recognise it.

...looks to be an early lower valve cover with a couple connecting rods on the ends to support the grey pvc pipe center rod.

DUMBBELLS?

gostraight 02-26-2008 04:14 PM

brake rotors would make an excellent freasbe for an annoying chiuahua!

al lkosmal 02-26-2008 09:03 PM

Chris,
Thanks. The paper towel holder is made from a valve cover and two rods. Cut a length of PVC pipe to hang the roll from. Got to do something with the old lower valve covers when replaced with the later style. (good eyes JFairman)

al

I'd cut the rotors in half and weld the halves together at right angles to make bookends.

Chris Lovell 02-27-2008 08:48 AM

I love the trophy. Left Coast ingenuity never ceases to amaze me!

The guy who used to build my VW motors had a wood burning stove in his shop....the vent stack was made from old cylinders which made for excellent heat exchangers.

Got to love these last two. That retro dinette table is very cool. And I'd love to see a piture of the woodstove smoke stack made of engine cylinders. Tremendous idea!
