The windshield of my 85 carrera took a rock hit which cracked the windshield. I was on the way to the track, Homestead, FL, -but it really did happen on the road. This is the windshield with the internal radio antenna, so I'm sure it isn't a cheap piece of glass. A couple of questions. I talk to the insurance agent tomorrow- and I am "sure" it will be covered. Is there a Porsche OEM glass that I should demand, or will the aftermarket glass be ok? I assume they will use new gaskets, etc- after all these are 16yrs old- again, porsche oem any different than the no name brand they will want to use?
Can any glass shop put one of these in? I don't want leaks, or a windshield that flies away. Thanks, just want some guidance on what I should expect from the insurance. Gary |

I lost a windsheild to a teeny little rock last summer. I stopped in to a body shop that handles the local exotics and got a recomendation from them. I was very pleased to get great service and enjoyed chatting with the installer about some of the other cars he had worked on. (some local sports stars) I got OEM glass and no troubles with the insurance company.

Check with your insurance - in MA, glass is covered under comprehensive insurance which is what most people carry and it doesn't effect your premium. I change mine once a year due to heavy pitting.

My glass has taken a beating too. I believe you can insist on OEM glass, since that is what came on your car. Aftermarket glass can be as good, though. The insurance company probably will not give you trouble. A new gasket is absolutely necessary and it should be 'gooped' with sealer. All this is in the factory manual, according to my understanding. Last year I believe the German glass with antannae was $600 for the part.
I asked the dealer who they used. In Tacoma that is Safelite. ------------------ '83 SC |

One reply mentioned this, but did the others notice any change (read increase) in their premiums when they changed their windshield?
I took a rock a bit ago and overnight it developed into a crack. Its not in the "viewing" are but never the less its not right and needs to be fixed. Thx, JA |

I've heard American glass is a lot harder than German glass; doesn't pit as easily. Anybody else?

Yes, insist on OEM glass. Even if it takes six weeks, it's worth it. ALSO: contact your local Porsche dealer, and find out who installs Porsche glass for them. Use that person, because 911 glass is some of the hardest glass to install.
OEM glass will say "SEKURIT" or "SIGLA" on the glass somewhere. I was confused by the "SIGLA" mark until I saw a peice of glass with this mark come out of a sealed Porsche box. This tells me it's OEM, so it's fine. Make sure the installer gets all the trim in, correctly and straight, and don't settle for anything less than 100% satisfaction. I got into a shouting match with a glass installer once - Terry thought he'd installed my trim correctly, and the 1/4" gaps along the corners told me differently. ------------------ Mark Szabo 1986 911 Targa 3.2 1987 Escort 5-speed 1.9 RIP The Porsche Owners Gallery |

And, of course, if you car has the radio antenna built into the glass, it would have to be a factory glass ...

My non-factory glass - made by Pinkington I believe - has an antenna embedded within it.

Thanks- I talked to State Farm this morning- all is well. My mechanic recommended one local glass shop, and installer- and luckily the shop is on the State Farm list. Everyone agreed to OEM Glass- it is on order as we speak. The installer warranties his work against leaks, squeaks, etc for a year. All has gone smooth so far, hope the install goes as smooth.
Thanks again for your help gary |
