Houndstooth in a 993 - whowouldathunkit

I've been jonesin to try houndstooth in Ginger's Boxster red interior and finally found the right soft back sport seats to try it out. I think it turned out great. The trim shop had some trouble getting the vynal to stretch right, so they are going to redo in a few weeks. I wanted to make sure the colors worked.

Also put on a set of 996 Hollow Turbo twists with Pirellis - 18x11 and 18x8.

I'm a sucker for Houndstooth and it has been done by Porsche, but this may not fare well for re-sale in all honesty.

The houdstooth looks good, the vinyl definately needs some work.... :)

Good color combo though, looks good!

Cheers

I want to have an affair with Ginger.....

Since the seats are not original to the car and Mark kept the original seats, re-sale is not an issue.

The houndstooth looks great!

Looks great......Ginger should be happy! I'm putting a set of sport seats w/ houndstooth inserts in my 1973T; I can't wait.

Probably would have been a good choice for you.

Well....vinyl is a manufacturer's way of getting a product out there in a cheap easy way. Leather wears better, smells heavenly and is more comfortable. The cost difference is not really that much when you look at it.

I've done more than a few cars and tend towards leather if I'm keeping the ride. It's not a "dis", just an observation....

Mark Wilson 02-18-2008 07:50 AM

This was an experiment to see if the colors worked. Cost for leather would have been double. I wasn't willing to throw the extra $$ at it for a test.

Joe Bob 02-18-2008 08:07 AM

Well, it looks good.

German vinyl is fantastic. I've spoken with several quality upholstery shops and they have all been fond of german vinyl. I chose vinyl for my Recaro Pole Positions because of the quality and because the grain and color matched the Porsche grain and color better than Recaro leather.

To each his own I guess.

The seats look like they belong in the car. I think you should be very happy with the final product.

A friend of mine had Tony at Autobahn make some houndstooth inserts for his 964 Cup car, and I think they look great. The early car reference in a later model works for me.

Love the look in those Pole Positions. Ruf has put Houndstooth in some of their cars as well and it looks great.

Actually, cloth is more comfortable. Helps hold you in place with spirited driving.
Warm in winter, cool in summer.

And good cloth will outwear leather.

EarlyPorsche 02-19-2008 06:30 PM

Well cloth in a 993 would be foolish so lets not stray to what is not important.

I think your Porsche looks different and not in a bad way. I wouldn't do it but it does look interesting.

Do you think you will switch over to leather now? I wouldn't leave vinyl in a 993, perhaps a long hood because most of them came with it, but not a 993. Unless you are looking for something you can beat up on and not care.

I'm confused. I have some buddies who run a top & upholstery shop catering to dealers. I learned from them that only the centers of almost all OEM seats are leather, the bolsters being vinyl because it stands up better than leather to the wear of one sliding in and out of the seat. Oh, and the seat backs are vinyl as well.

If I recall correctly, Lexus seats are one of the few exceptions that are all leather, whereas Mercedes, BMW, etc. have vinyl bolsters.

I know my 99 C5 had vinyl bolsters (although I had the crappy leather and vinyl replaced with a decent leather when I had the seats reupholstered).

You're right about the cost difference not being great - it's mainly a labor intensive job that one is paying for.

Guys,
It's just a car. Vinyl or leather... really, what's the diff? They both do the same thing. Leather won't make me younger or better looking. Sure as hell ain't gonna get me more sex. I'm not sure I see why folks are concerned about it. I'm keeping he stock full leather seats to go back in if I sell it or get too fat for the sports.

I drove her to work today and the houndstooth centers are supremely comfortable and warm. Also hold me with no sliding. This was a great choice for me.
