Cool New member signing on !!!

I finished my tour overseas (non-military, same place) about a month ago and am back on continental US soil.

I have been without a 911 for three years and just got my new "baby". I bought her from an "eccentric" sort, down here in Louisiana. The guy seems to have been pretty good at working on / playing with 911's.

Since I have spent a fortune over the years with Pelican, I thought I might go ahead and sign up - especially since I will probably be needing to pick some brains on this site. My new intended "daily driver" is a 1979 SC Targa 3.0 - and believe it or not, the top does not leak or whistle. The car looks pretty good, runs great (so far) and does not yet seem to have any issues. Here are some pics:

My last 911 was a pretty fast "beast" named Thumper. I've since learned that she was "racked up" on a culvert in Texas. Here is an old pic:

I look forward to being a part of the group!

Welcome to the world of old sentimental farts with a warm heart and a clinically absurd passion for everything vintage Porsche!

How do I "fix" the tail?

One of the reasons I bought this car is I've owned numerous "tea trays" and don't like dealing with the screws in the rubber surround - plus I will tell you it weighs much less - or are you wanting me to ditch the tail altogether?

From past experience, I can attest that the tail becomes quite useful when you are travelling between 130 and 145. The back of these cars are pretty light at high speed.

However, I am open to further discussion. Anyone else have any input on the "unusual" tail?

If you like it, leave it!
What I love about this forum is that everyone has a different opinion.

Make it yours. My opinion on the matter only matters if I were buying it fromyou.

I think he means loose the screws and two black pieces. But if you like it by all means keep it. You are the one driving it and looking at it everyday.

I got it !

I've done the Duck Tail too many times on previous projects. At speeds, they really fight the air (IMO).

You could be right on the screws and flippers - however, in person, they do look pretty cool. I'll drive her for a while and see what I think in a few weeks.

This is my 13th 911 - I've had and done a lot. I am only new to Pelican, not Porsche.

Welcome.

The Gurney flap on the tail should at least be one piece, no bling and no RS, IMO. Just a suggestion.

Then, an oil cooler in the front, and you've got a great looking front end.

Wow ! - eerily close looking car

Same exact tail - longer slope though.

If it WAS her, the price would be much higher. Roll cage, harness window, plexiglass, tubbed rear, etc... I went too far on that one.

Thanks for the link though.

Question Targas......................

OK - I don't get it, what is the deal with Targas?

I have owned my share of 911's over the years - avoiding Targas because of some kind of bias that I've always heard.

This thing is fun to drive. As much convertible as I want, top comes out of trunk and goes on when rain starts to fall. I didn't know what I was missing all of this time.

Why don't the mainstream Porsche "experts" like Targas?

Consider yourself one of the enlightened few. They are the ultimate configuration when it comes to enjoyment in "fair weather". I've driven mine in temps in the high 20's, however, and had a smile frozen on my face.

They seem to get knocked for "lack of stiffness" and a bit more weight, but my guess is that 99.3% of the people on this board couldn't get but a fraction of a second quicker in lap time compared to a coupe if weight and all else were equal.

There was a renowned racer from 'back in the day', maybe it was Mark Donohue, who said he actually preferred a Targa, as he could use the "flex" to make the car drive to his liking.

I wasn't looking for a Targa when I bought mine; it kind of was meant to be, but in retrospect, I love it. It sees it's share of track time, and doesn't seem to suffer against coupes or newer 911's. It can't all be due to the driver....
