Post Alternator, running probs?

Well the honeymoon is over with my new 87 targa. Just got it back from the mechanic for a valve adjustment and fluid change and it seems to run slightly worse and I still hear a light ticking noise from the valves. He said the valve guides were fine and that some valves were tight some were loose. Is it possible not to be able to get complete ticking out of the engine?

Second thing, he says my alternator bearings are going bad. My alt light pulses simultaneously with a mid-range groaning sound coming from the engine. I also noticed when looking at the fan belt, that in rythmm with the alt light and the groaning, the fan belt seems to build slack and catch up. Does this sound like I need a new fan belt and alternator? Tomorrow I will start with the fan belt first, but I imagine this won't end the groanind sound coming from the suspected alternator. Also will badly cracked insulator wires on the spark plug wires effect anything?

I am beginning to believe my car was rubber stamped by the recommended porsche shop that completed the PPI. All I can do now is hold my breath and hope for the best. So far the mechanic missed an obvious rust spot on the door sill that had been badly repaired, a bad alternator, clackety valves, a loose steering wheel, a burned out turn signal, third brake and license plate light, a leaking ac line and a well worn 1st gear syncro. Makes me really wonder if the compression #'s he gave me were even for real. Should of had the local wrench perform a compression also. O well!

I would take your car back to the mechanic and explain all these things....ask for your money back unless he can fix the "valve adjustment"

sometimes i think of putting a hidden video camera inside the car while they do the work and see what REALLY goes on in their shops.

Mike

I just replaced the bearings in my alt for $18.30 from Motion Ind. it is a marchal and the bearing #'s are 6303 and 6200. Yours maybe different but should be about the same price. If you were going to remove the alt yourself, there isn't many more steps involved in replacing the bearings.

good luck

Just checked did the lights out spark plug wire test and noticed at least a 1/2 a dozen blue sparks along them on the top of the fan housing. Guess it's time to replaces these, huh?
