Post Post Heat Exchanger Upgrade (electrical problems; shifter improvements)

UGGGGGGG what a project. I will post a more descriptive blow by blow experience and I took many digital pic so I will be putting together a tech article...

but just to talk about some symptoms...

What should I do with my O2 sensor...Right now it is zip tied to a bumper support...can I cut the wire, or uplug it in the eng compartment....

My wipers stopped working...what is up with that? my cigarette lighter works and I checked the fuse...how can this upgrade cause this problem???

While the HE's were off I cleaned off 20 years of gunk off the tranmission bell housing...WOW...I went through 3 cans of brake cleaner and demolished a wire brush...but it is clean, who knew there was a 915 under all that gunk...and miraculously my 915 shifts like butter!!!! I had heard all the horror stories about 915's and I thought that not being able to get into 2nd occationally and feeling the teeth with each shift (not grinding but just feeling them mesh) was normal...I must have cleared some gunk off the coupler or some cables...cuz it shifts like a dream now...

I have a tapping sound on the passenger bank of cylinders...is that a leaking gasket? To be honest, I did not torque the bolts yet...I needed the car for work, and I still had 3mm to cut through the 8mm hex key to attach it to a 8mm socket, and then my torque wrench....

but the thing that bugs me most is the inoperative wipers and washer pump...those and the cigarette lighter share a fuse...but like I said the lighter works...

thanks for any advice

No O2 sensor? Your car is going to run like crap! You need to make sure that an input is welded into your muffler or one of the heat exchangers...

okay...

that is what I thought...but my car seems to run fine right now...and my dash light doesn't come on either....

Is my O2 sensor shot???

but some people in past posts have said that this is a "upgrade" some people unplug the sensor...and say it improves others say it gets worse.,..

Your dash light is keyed to mileage on the odometer (every 30K) not the sensor's health.

Sorry Wayne, but its well documented that aged CIS K-lambda (80-83) cars run better with the O2 sensor disconnected. I didn't even put mine on my SSI's, I got a M18x1.50 drainplug to fill the hole.

I really dont think your wipers not working has anything to do with the exhaust upgrade. I would check the switch on the column, often can get gunked up, and I would suspect it if your washers are also not working.

On your 915, put in Swepco 201, adjust the linkage and install new bushings. If it doesn't grind, be happy and sleep well at night until you can save up enough for a short housing G50 upgrade.

Torque your exhaust nuts to 16 ft lbs and then see what it sounds like.

Good Luck
Nick.

My mechanic...Callas Rennsport said it is fine to run without the O2...and the car runs fine...there may be some fine tuning to optimize low end, but it is fine without it...

Can't figure out the wiper problem...it is really bothering me...

but what is more amazing is the improvements...

no more cloud of smoke in the morning or after sitting for a while...

no more back firing when cold...

shifting is smoother (I already have the Swepco in it)

no chattering when pulling away from a stop

not to mention more hp, torque and better throttle response...better sounds...turns heads...but turns head of cops too
