Simple heater backdate question
 

I'm backdating my 89 Carrera that has factory HE's.

I have read all the threads, but none that I have found categorically state if the left side heater duct that Pelican sells (see pic), allows ample room to clear the larger sized distributor of the 3.2.

If it doesn't, is it a matter of re-shaping it just a bit (hammering), or will it require cutting and welding as I have seen some of the others require?

Also looking for the flexible hose for the left side to connect the duct with the connection that protrudes thru the engine tin from the HE. I'd prefer to purchase this from Pelican also. Anyone happen to know which of the various hoses is the one that would work for this application?

I think it's all covered in this thread...I can't tell if that is the 930 left side hot air duct from this angle, but Pelican has them, and it's what I used along with hose sourced from Pelican also.

Joseph, I understand your confusion. I looked in the Pelican catalog, and the Left Hand Air Duct (that you pictured above) is not the same one that I purchased several years ago. I "think" mine was an OEM 930 part, and it was significantly more than the one listed (like around $170 if I recall). From that picture, I can see why you question the clearance.

ps: compare that one, with the one pictured in the thread I linked to, and they're not even close :(.

You can tap it in and it will clear.

I had to do some significant banging on mine to make it fit. Get a propane torch, heat it up and wait away. If you don't it will make the distributor cap cockeyed and the car won't run properly.

X2. If I did this again I'd hold out for the OEM 930 duct.

I agree, I broke a sparkplug wire during the process as well so it wound up costing as much as the 930 duct.

Hmmm... not sure where I turn to now.

Not a big deal to massage at all. I used the standard early 911 left side duct. Got a marking pencil and worked out where it needed to be bent in. Heated it up and using the round end of a ball peen hammer, hammered it into shape. Took all of 10 minutes start to finish. Some black paint and finished.

Dumb question I know - why do you backdate the heater?

To get rid of the stock exhaust and go with headers or SSI's

...also to get rid of all that heater junk. Hoses, motor, ducts over the top of the engine...

That's why I did it.

and the heater works pretty well as is. If driving a steady speed, you have to turn it off.

I checked my old orders and here's the 930 part # that I ordered from Pelican ($180 back then): OEM-93010632102.

For the price difference of 120.00, I think I'll do a bit of "re-shaping". Maybe I can post some before & after pics.

I cut out the desired portion of mine and welded in a bent/curved piece of metal. Worked well, looks clean and cost me nothing.

I have the one pictured in the first post. It will require "reshaping." Torch, beer, and a BFH work well at reshaping it. You really need to pound the ish out of it though.

I'm sure this has been covered, but is the right side duct required on the 3.2's to backdate? I really only want to get rid of that hulking ductwork and fan assembly for better access.

There is a certain dismantler selling these as a pair at a pretty good discount to Pelican's combined prices. But, if you only buy one, Wayne's within $5. Are the dismantler's pieces the same (they look it) or are they different? I'm hesitant to post a link to this "heavenly" dismantler's site on PP out of respect.

No. If you look at the 3rd picture in the thread I linked to above, you can see the left side air duct and hose I used, and that's all you need to connect to the heat tube that sticks up through the rear engine tin. No change to the right side.
