CV-joint rebuilding

I'm looking to rebuild my CV-joints and I pretty much know the ball-bearings will need replacing. Anyone know where to source them? What's the consensus on rebuilding? If the balls need replacing, just punt and buy a new CV's? Hoping to salvage mine, but I let them go way too far before a rebuild.

it's a time vs. cost issue -- some think it fun to rebuild them

did you play with mud a lot as a kid? if so, you may love doing this.

it is certainly instructive to do it....

there is a thread with images from a VW manual that will be very helpful to you if you can find it.

I've never seen CV parts [ball bearings, inner piece andouter "cage?" ] for sale as individual parts..

When my CV's went > there were definite groves in the inner piece > ergo replace the entire CV joint.

Personally > I would not replace suspect individual pieces of a CV joint > but replace the entire CV as a single unit. >>> some argue that it's best to just replace the entire axle/CV assembly

You might be able to find a local re builder that will regrind and fit oversize bearings...most larger city's have someone that does it....If you track the car or do any hard driving I would just get new axle assemblies

Thanks for the useful info. This is kind of what I expected. This is for a track car, so I'm going to go ahead and order up some replacement axles. I'll just be more diligent about pulling, cleaning and repacking them on a regular basis.

Hm, problem is my car is a '74 with the four bolt cv-joints (two pins). Doesn't seem to be rebuild kits for those CV's. In fact, I'm told that the CV's are no longer available and you I have to go with a 930 CV's and drill two of the holes for the pins?

Jim, I'm using 930 CV's on a 74 and the pin fits the hole fine without drilling.
