Tire Size Picture Comparison Thread
Tires need replacing and Im not crazy about the size still on the car from the PO. They are 205/55-15's. Im looking to fill out the wheel wells with a larger diameter tire between what it is now and the large OE 185/70 VR15's. I know I may need to lower it a bit but I'm still looking for something a little larger.
What I would love to see are some pictures of different size tires on wheels. Im particulary interested in 15 inch wheel and 195-205/55-65 sizes but maybe this can be a reference for others as well. I know someone is going to tell me to do a search but I searched long and hard and couldnt find what I was looking for (visuals). If I missed some good info or pictures please direct me to them. Here is my '72S with the 205/55's that I am looking to replace. Maybe with 195/65 ???? Lets see some pics please! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1204095906.jpg Brian |
squatted a little bit with a set of 205/55's looks real nice. I used to have a customer with a '70 911 S that had his setup like that. I wish I had pictures to share of it.
find someone to re-index those torsion bars and make that car look good! nice car man, it looks red in the pic... is it? Tangerine is pretty awesome too. |
I just put 195/65's on the front and 205/65's on the rear of my 1970. I used this cool wheel/tire calculator to figure out what size to use:

205-60R-15 Pirelli-- ride height has a lot to do with it. But ride height must not be set at the sacrifice of corner balance or geometry.

Thanks for the pics. My concern about 205's is that the sidewalls bulge on my 6" wheels so thats why I was thinking 195's.
Hester: Putting 195/65 in front and 205/60 in rear makes the front tire diameter bigger than the back (.75 cm i think). Is it odd to have such a combination? Do you have a profile picture to compare them? Heres a pic of 195/65's all around and I really like it! 205/60 are slightly smaller diamerter but too pudgy? Opinions? I also love the ride height. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1204132230.jpg Brian |
A 6" rim is within spec for a 205/60 tire.

I don't have a profile picture but I'll work on getting one.
I used "195/65's on the front and 205/65's on the rear" (not 205/60). The circumference of the rear tire is 1.6 inches greater than the circumference of the front tire. I have 205/60/13's on the 5 inch wheels on my CVCC. They bulge ridiculously! Hester has the 7 inch 911R wheels so the 205's are fine. The sidewall is pretty straight. 195's all around might work well for you. I think the idea is to keep the section width of the tire close to the wheel width. Grady Clay suggested using a slightly wider tire in the rear to compensate for the 911's tendency for oversteer so that's what I did. I was coming off the freeway once when I had the 18 year-old 185/70's on, the LSD floated the rear, and the back end stepped way out. I countersteered like I was one of the Duke boys and got her back in line. That was a real wake up to 911 oversteer. |
Thanks for the good infro Hester. 195/65 front and 205/65 rear is definately a possibility. I was considering geting some 7" or maybe 7R wheels for the rear so that tire would fit well should I decide to sooner rather than later.
I have yet to experience the dreaded 911 oversteer. Ive never driven one on a track and dont drive agressively enough on the street I guess. Im sure its scary if you dont see it coming. By the way Hester, you have a beautiful car and a great story so good luck with it. |
205/60 15 all 'round on mine
the car has since had new suspension and lowered http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/JV911/JV911.jpg |
