Is my starter headed giving up the ghost? ’88 911 Carrera (Stock) 3.2
So my car has been seeing more and more garage time unfortunately as the spring progresses and my work load increases (I’m a pool contractor) at any rate, got home from a long day and thought I would be lucky to catch some golden hour, top down drive time. I un loaded my work truck and bumped the ignition to warm my cab up and was greeted with a loud grinding sound, basically the sound of the starter but not turning the motor over??? I quickly backed off as soon as I heard the sound and waited a second and tried again. No problem, she fired right up with no sweat. Drove the car around the block a couple times, then got the mail and put her back in the garage. Thought I would try again and no sweat fired right up. Does it sound like my starter is head south or any other issues possibly starting? I’ve got 62K on an all-original car. As far as records indicate my car has never been a daily driver.
Thanks in advance -Ryan

Hi Ryan,
Unless this happens regularly, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I have the same car with almost 4X the number of miles you have on the original starter. It is possible you have a few worn or missing teeth on the starter ring gear and that would require an engine drop to replace. I'd probably wait until your clutch goes to do anything about it. Others will tell you that the pinion gear on the starter may not be fully engaging the starter ring gear and it might be time for a new starter motor. Either way, unless it happens often, you're probably fine for many thousand miles to come.

I have an 89 and this happens once in awhile. I must have a couple of bad teeth... If it gets bad enough I'll drop the engine and trans and put in new parts. I have a new starter and the teeth looked good about 25k miles ago when I did the top end.
If you need to get a new starter search around there is a better than stock at a cheaper price... one available. I think it is made by Nipondenso or something like that. |

Yeah thanks guys, it's actually the first time I've heard it. I've put about 2500 miles on the car since buying in November. Just thought I would ask.

Same Problem here...there are teeth on the starter ring that start to wear in the sections where it tends to stop. It slowly gets worse untill it gets really bad...which is what happened to me. Sort of kickstarted, no pun intended, me into doing the rebuild since the engine has to come out. It will happen more often and can be very troublesome.
