Start-up exhaust smoke on SC normal??

Hi guys. The owner of an SC that I'm looking at says the car smokes a little upon startup. It only has 36k miles on it as well. Is this a cause for concern, because I don't ever remember my father's SC doing this. He's asking a lot of money for it and so it has to be near perfect. Thanks if you can help!

Everyone's going to tell you this... get a PPI. Then you don't have to worry. I will tell you, my SC with 100+ k miles on it emits some smoke upon start up. The longer it sits, the worse the smoke. But, a little puff of smoke is probaby nothing to worry about. (a puff though).

Don't worry about it : it's normally just water steam.....and the bad weather favorise this apparition ; the difference of temperature between air and exhaust explain that .

But i can just do a supposition....

Where is the car? Let us know and we can help you find a good place to do a good PPI.

Do not let the seller pick the PPI mechanic.

Take it you haven't seen it.

You NEED to get a PPI. The smoke might or might not mean anything.

If the car's that good, you need to budget $1000-1500 for ENCLOSED shipping, depending on distance.

Thanks guys..

Tcar- Funny you mention this. The owner proffered his mechanic to me for the PPI work. He basically said that his price is fixed, so it looks like I'll have to look elsewhere. The shipping fee is a killer expense!!
Thanks again

I have been following your other thread as well. Dude, I would definitely walk away from this one. $29k for an SC is rediculous unless it is absolutely pristine, and even then many might argue if it was still worth it. This is coming from someone who helped rekindle the SCWDP mind you. I love my 83 cabriolet, but man $29k. I paid $14k for mine with 119,000 miles on it and a pretty fresh top end. Many other upgrades had already been done as well (mechanically like tensioners, turbo tie rods, etc). I have had a wonderful year and a half almost now of pretty much trouble free driving. The only problem I have had other tahn basic maintenance items has been a failed clutch cable.

I would love for you to join the Plot, and so I highly recommend an SC, but look around and you will find many great SC's for a LOT less money...

I am far from any where near the knowledge as a lot on this board have, but I wanted to give you a perspective from someone who was in your very shoes not long ago.

Good luck, and above all else, be patient... you'll find her when you least expect it!

no way is an sc worth 28k even if it is pristine. For that $ you can get a descent 930 dont walk away run really fast. A Nice sc will go for 14-16500

I agree with you basically, but I could see where the exception might be someone looking for an SC to only show at concours events and found a truly like new (pristine) SC...

Ok - firstly I don't know anything about the other thread where you are talking about the car , which the other guys seem to have read but you can take their advice as it is usually really good.

As to the smoke, I rebuilt my SC and it has MAYBE 1000 miles on it since, if it sits for any length of time say a month between starts it puts out a puff of smoke then it clears right up and you dont see it again, if I start it daily, weekly or even semi weekly it does not do it, or if it does I dont notice it.

Todd- thanks for clarifying this. I thought that there should be no smoke normally on the SC. I guess its just the nature of the engine

Regards

+1 on 28 being too high, I LOVE my sc but that is too much. I paid 10,500 for mine two year 3 years ago. ALWAYS get a ppi it is great piece of mind. Keep looking the sc is a great car, still very go-cartish the 3.0 is a fun engine.
Mine smokes a little at start up but only a little.
