Help me turn two 911s in to one 911

I haven't been here much in the last half year, so hi to everyone I know!

Huge life changes--a soon to be growing family, and a major promotion--require a thinning of the automotive herd. Getting rid of the R32 and S2000 was easy (both are already gone), but figuring out what to do with a '74 track beast Euro Carrera car that's cool ugly and very fast, and a good 911/2 SWB convert with a 2.2E and otherwise stock suspension is more of a problem. There is no doubt that a 911 will remain in my life, but the question is how to convert these two 911s in to one.

The track rat does not attract me as an only 911; certainly not one that will mostly see street duty now. It is an absolute thrill to drive, but it's too much car for the street, and not very pretty. The SWB does attract as a street car, but I will need (had planned) to update the entire suspension, brakes, and would really like more power.

So, take an awesome MFI 2.7RS+ (est. 227 hp) with an even more awesome shortened 915 race box with LSD and lightened flywheel/PP and drop it in the SWB, and sell the '74 as a fully prepped track roller (suspension included), and sell the 2.2E motor seperately, or just sell both, get over it in a day or two, and look for someone else's well put together project? I'm not looking for an endless project, although I'd be willing to invest a little time upfront to swap motors and trannies if that's the direction I go in. It needs to look good (but not concours good) and drive really, really well. It would still see some track use, but mainly street.

The ideal scenario would be that I somehow end up with a little money back in my pocket when all is said and done too. Or is that asking too much?

Trusted Pelicanites, your advice is, as always, gold.

I'd keep the SWB car with the MFI motor and sell the rest. That would be pretty cool. I don't know how drivable the motor is on the street with your lightened fly wheel and short gears. You could just keep the tranny that's in the SWB. You may miss your early car and good ones are hard to find these days! My 2 cents.

Some ideas to ponder IF the convergence of best parts scenario has come to pass
$$ where you have to purchase new parts

1) remove motor, shifter, shift rod, pedal assembly, oil tank, oil lines, T-stat, gas tank, fuel pump, hardware, and trans from the 74 for install in the SWB

2) purchase fender cooler for the swb and install along with the 74 donor parts $$

3) get a nice pair of seats for the swb- as the 74 race ones are over the top for sporting use $$ and the ones in your car are not up to the task desired

4) suspension decisions : Tough call here as the entire front suspension can be swapped from the 74 to the swb. BUT then you have devalued the 74 a whole bunch. Out back, the rear suspension stays on the 74 as the parts are not compatible with the swb (with exceptions of torsions and those are not worth the extra labor to do so)
The front torsions could be swapped for no $ for smaller units. Out back polybronze, new inner bushings, torsions will be needed $$

Sway bars- these can be removed from the 74 and installed on the swb. rear mounts will have to be welded to the chassis $$

5) Take the euro headlamps from the 74 and install on the swb

6) expenses on wheels and tires $$ for a stickier set up

7) LABOR $$ to do all this

So others may be able to help here with left over value: What is a 74 Carrera roller worth with trick ASP Elephant Racing set up, raised spindle struts, revalved bilsteins, center oil cooler, TRE roll bar, race seats, iroc bumps, duck tail, 7/8 x 16's with dot R rubber ??

the 2.2 carbed E- I probably have a buyer for it; 356 that we are doing a 6 cyl conversion.
early trans- you have two- $800-900 each ?

Huge life changes--a soon to be growing family, and a major promotion--require a thinning of the automotive herd.

Simplify, sell everything and by a nice driver. Spend more time with the family.

There is something to be said for simplicity.

As long as the driver is a GT3 or similar!

Is a promotion that requires selling cars a promotion?

Anyway, I'd sell it all w/o the time input that swapping requires. Then buy another.

Hi, that is a sad state to be in... not knowing what to do because of having 2 nice P-cars that run. BUT, I have to agree with some of the others, sell them both and buy a good street car with the funds.

Sounds like your issue going forward is time. Combining tow cars takes time.

I'd follow the path that gets you to your objective with minimal time consumed. Sell the projects and buy what you want.

Ditto, sale everything, and find "the right" car. Take your time and enjoy the quest.

I am full-on restoring a '70 911 to be what I want it to be, but that's just I wanted a project. Either car you do will have a ton of sweat, tears and time in. A 2.7RS MFI engine is valuable, so you should do quite well selling off both and then looking for another one that is more along the lines of what you want now.

What kind of 911 do you envision as a 'dream' ~$20K 911, if you're thinking about also putting a nit of cash back in your pocket?

another idea: "rent" the MFI'd one to somebody you know well for 1 year, or 2 years, etc.

could be very complicated, but then the car could come back to you

don't sell it to a best friend with the promise that they will never sell it again w/o letting you know and buy it back or bid on it -- I lost my 2002 that way long ago
