2.7 liter engine is coming out next week
I am pulling out the engine on my 1976 911S w/ the 2.7 liter engine.
The seals on the oil cooler are very leaky and I cannot continue to drive the car because of the leaks on exhaust system. While the engine is out, I am going to replace the original clutch/pressure plate, etc. Are there any recommendations of preventative maintence/repairs that I should be doing while the engine is out? The car has 100k miles on the original motor and the top end was rebuilt at 60k by the previous owner. Any suggestions would be welcome. TX, JOHN |

"While you're in there". . .
Ooh boy. Those words can mean an extra $0-$20,000 depending.

New fuel lines. High pressure and low pressure both.
New sound pad?

I second the cleaning of the engine compartment, and adjusting the valves. You will never have access this good.
Replace oil pressure light switch($7) Replace t-stat oring($2) Check and replace(probably) the oil breather hose. They get very stiff and brittle, and are very hard to get in with the engine in place. ($20) Replace the throw out bearing also.

Several items on the CIS system are easier to do with the engine out. If the vaccum hoses have not been replaced in a while, I'd definitely do that. You might want to pull the CSV (cold start valve) and clean it or outsource the cleaning to Witchhunters. You could also replace the seals for the intake runners. That's all the cheap CIS stuff I can think of.
I have a 76 also and it smokes pretty bad. I'm going after the oil return tubes this weekend. But might have to do what you're doing if I can't figure it out. Good luck. |

Make sure all CIS components are functioning correctly. The AAR and AAV are a lot easier to access w/ engine removed.
Check wiring to the blue and green connections behind the mixture control unit. Replace the sound insulation pad. Clean and/or polish everything.

As this is a 2.7 motor, things 'could' get expensive.
Check the all the head studs. Depending on how this goes, there may be a more work to the engine/case. All this is depending on how extensive the top-end rebuild was. Upgrade to the Carrera chain tensioners. Upgrade to the 11 blade fan. Get rid of the thermal reactors and upgrade to SSI's. I had the 2.7 motor in mine, it ran very well. Until I had to replace the motor because I sheared some intermediate shaft sprocket teeth. The cost to rebuild a 2.7 was too expenesive, so I put in a 3.0. Good luck! Craig

I just had my clutch/presure replaced at the local shop.,.,I wish I had the time, and place, and knowledge to be able to pull it, and do it myself. I'm right now waiting for the phone call with the total cost before I pick up up in a little bit.
