Just arrived home with RSR clone

Just got back today after 1000 miles from Tampa to Louisville. I have been looking for an RS or RSR clone for quite a while and the right one just had not come along yet. After selling my 930 in Dec., I kept searching even though I purchased a Viper to quench my toy needs.

The car is a '72 T with steel flares, Gary Stratton 9" & 11" 3-piece Fuchs, Stratton built ducktail mounted on original steel deck, 3.2l 1989 motor mated to a rebuilt 915 trans, full 930 suspension and brakes, factory GT3 seats, RS door panel, carpet, Wevo shift and adjustable suspension goodies. The car probably weighs around 2300. No AC or heat. I had been lusting after some listers cars on here like the orange RSR(Gary?) in the northeast, BBII etc... I think I found found something similar except in Speed Yellow.

The car is what I expected, light and quick, but definitely does not have the neck snapping thrust that my modded 930 gave. The 1000 mile journey was actually not that bad. The seats are quite comfortable and even though the straight headers to Supertrapps is loud without baffles, it didn't bother me the least.

Now I just need to decide if I want Carrera or Porsche side decals and if I should get grey or black.
Anyone want a 1999 silver/blue strip Viper GTS?

Nice car. Interior is very cool. If that is truly a red interior why not a red Carrera script. Very different

911quest 03-02-2008 02:54 PM

I knew the Viper wouldn't last.....

vash 03-02-2008 02:58 PM

maybe white script?

that car is bad arse.

Evans, Marv 03-02-2008 02:59 PM

Ya scored big!! Great car & congrats. Where did you find it?

Macroni 03-02-2008 03:01 PM

Great looking. I would go w/ black porsche.

EarlySport 03-02-2008 03:22 PM

That looks very, very nice.

Going back to the recent thread ( Value of RSR replicas ) I would love to know what you paid, but I also understand that's a rude question and you probably woudn't want to reveal it.. :-)

DougM 03-02-2008 03:22 PM

The car had been listed in PCA back in Dec. I just happened to stumble on it the other week and it was located in Tampa. Had a break in the midwest weather and did a fly in/drive home this weekend.

I like the Boxster red interior, but I think red script may be too bold for me. This car will be 98% street and weekend toy with a possible DE or 2 per season if time permits.

Tony, the Viper is great, but the rear wheel power is sometimes annoying. The thing chirps the tires all the time unless you purposely slip the clutch. Also, there are always plenty of Vipers for sale, and the RSR/RS clones are harder to find what you are looking for in the targeted price range.

Cory M 03-02-2008 03:46 PM

beautiful car, I think dark grey Porsche side script with matching grey centers on the fuchs would look cool

JeremyD 03-02-2008 03:53 PM

That was in Tampa and I didn;t know about it - damn I'm slipping - nice car with nice upgrades you did good.

I personally would go the black and yellow route with that car - blacked out fuchs - Black Carrera along the doors - and a black vinyl P O R S C H E alond the rear decklid to replace the RSR Bling

Joe Bob 03-02-2008 03:57 PM

White or Orange script....CARRERA....

Zef 03-02-2008 04:27 PM

Cooooooooooooool 911...have fun with that baby.

anthony 911 03-02-2008 04:32 PM

nice...

trader220 03-02-2008 04:34 PM

wow car looks fantastic enjoy! what about black PORSCHE on the bottom not the standard Carrera script?

Jcon 03-02-2008 04:35 PM

Noooo....Side Script.

al lkosmal 03-02-2008 04:47 PM

I 2nd no side script. That is a clean machine. Nice...as is. I'd refinish the Fuchs, RSR style...very tasty.

SCWDP911 03-02-2008 04:57 PM

Nice! I don't know about the side graphics, but what about grey "Carrera" followed by red "RSR". MikeZ can make them for you. Maybe one of the photoshop gurus here can put these ideas together visually for you to help you choose. You ought to bring that thing down to one of our Mid TN Fun Runs. We have them usually between Nashville and Memphis somewhere (exploring the backroads). We are also tyrying to get a Tennessee Cars and Coffee established as well, and that will probably end up being held in Nashville the first Saturday of each month.

Hey, Doug, nice 930 replacement. BTW, do you still have those Lindseys you had as spares?

JV911SYDNEY 03-02-2008 05:17 PM

Congrats!!!

Looks like a beauty! I'd love to see it sometime when I'm in Louisville.

DougM 03-02-2008 06:24 PM

Mark
I still have the Lindsey's. I need to check the offsets to see if they will fit this car. If they do, I may refinish to a factory RSR finish and sell these 3 piece wheels. If they won't fit, I will put them up for sale.

tobluforu 03-02-2008 06:40 PM

Very cool car. I had a viper for 2 years that was super charged and had all the viper goodies. Just going to get coffee cost an arm and a leg in gas. BUT, it was fun while it lasted. I put R rated tires in the rear, and there is something very un-nerving hitting second gear at almost 60 mph and the rear end breaking loose. Especially when that happens in 3 seconds. I can't tell you how many times that car scared the crap out of me, my wife and my friends. But it was a good kind of scared.
Have fun in the new ride.

If you decide to sell either set let me have first dibs please. I've got a guy interested in my 8and 10x16s (Gary Stratton 10x16s). I want some Lindsey or Stratton 17s to replace them.

DougM 03-03-2008 02:22 AM

Once I figure things out, I will definitely be selling 1 pair. If the Lindsey offsets won't work on the car, they will go. If they will, I will send them for re-finish and then the 3-piece Stratton set will go. I will let you know.

Wickd89 03-03-2008 06:47 AM

wonderful interior. Great for an older car and looks like it can perform..

Deschodt 03-03-2008 11:00 AM

Wasn't that car at Dave White's last year ? IF that's the same, $$$$$ !

elpresidente 03-03-2008 12:22 PM

Sweet!!! We need to organize a Louisville Area Pelican Coffee Day. Looks like a lot us got new to us P-cars this winter!

DougM 03-03-2008 12:59 PM

Yes, Dave White did the work on the car and had Gary Stratton do the body. The owner developed a medical condition and his doctor told him that he would be better off staying off the track.

Elpresidente, you should stop by a PCA meeting. It is next Monday at the dealer. We usually all go out and have a drink after.

elpresidente 03-03-2008 03:01 PM

Thanks. Sounds like a plan. I'm a new PCA member as of December.

dzls rok 03-03-2008 03:08 PM

congrats! very nice. interesting interior color...but i like it!

DougM 03-03-2008 03:36 PM

I have loaded a side shot if anyone is good at photoshop and could maybe put on some Carrera and Porsche script in black, gray and white? When the weather clears again, I may see if I can pressure wash the paint off the wheels.

bueller, bueller?

oh and i like it without the carrera script

DougM 03-04-2008 02:19 AM

The car has a 915 trans and from the records, the shifter is a wevo915 with the shifter coupling and a taller shift knob ordered through Smart Racing Products.

Iowa911, thanks for the pics, it gives me some idea.

gestalt1 03-04-2008 05:29 AM

with the yellow i think something a little wilder would work. the graphics on these ST 911s would look awsome and would match the red interior.

Beautiful car!

I love the interior, very original. What color is it? Cork? Seems a little more red that Dane's car.

I agree with Jeremy's comments above. I would go with blackened out Fuchs and black Carrera script.

Anyway congratulations on a wonderful purchase!

In that case, heartfelt congratulations ! This car is beau*ti*ful, even better in person than on those pictures... That spot on the front hood is leftover from my drool when I saw it in person ! You are a lucky guy !

DougM 03-04-2008 12:44 PM

Matteo, the interior is Boxster Red. The owner had found the red GT3 seats and then dyed the dash, knee pads and door pieces to match. Carpet is the standard RS set from Appbiz.

Greg
Thanks for the comments. I was surprised when I found the car in the PCA classifieds that it was still available, especially after seeing what went into it.

Gestalt
Although I do like those color schemes, I think they are a bit much for a car that will be a street car most of the time. I think my wife would decline date nights if we had to pull up to a nice restaurant in something that wild. Your signature shows a blue RSR. Do you have a picture?

s2per 03-04-2008 01:00 PM

I've seen that car up close and personal in Tampa and it's even better than the pictures show. Congrats on a very cool purchase!
