Relax animal lovers...of course I mean the converter on my '81 SC.
I'm taking down the converter and the OE muffler in preparation for my new GHL test pipe and muffler. As can be expected, the 6 bolts and nuts that attatch the cat inlet to the heat exchangers, were totally rusted. So much so, a socket would not even fit them, much less loosen them. My trusty mini-grinder and a sharp cold chisel did the trick. The moral of this story confirms what my mechanic said about old cats...they are usually melted down and plugged inside, making for a big exhaust restriction. Such is the case for the 20 year old one on my car. Looking inside with a Mag-lite, you can see the ceramic matrix is fused like melted glass. It's amazing the motor ran at all! (Just got a confirmation from Pelican that the GHL parts are on the way!! Looking forward to getting them installed). ------------------ Doug '81 SC Coupe (aka: "Blue Bomber") Canada West Region PCA members.home.net/zielke/911SC.htm |

As you may know I bolted on my Dual out GHL muffler the other day. I've really been enjoying the added harmony. It's a bit loud (ie. droning) at a constant 3k, but winding through the gears is aural exctasy.
I took the g-friend for her first ride of the season. The first thing she said was, "Ummm, it's really loud Dan". Then as we drove through town there was a snide,"Do you think you need to draw more attention to this car" comment. One mans' music is another womans' headache. ------------------ Dan Tolley 1987 911 Coupe http://www.cheaterswayside.com/911/gallery.asp?sort=0&userid=294 |

Interesting (if predictable) response from your girlfriend, Dan. I had heard the dual-outlet mufflers were a bit on the loud side. Mine is single-out, more for the valence issue than the noise. But I'm sure if the new muffler *is* louder, my long suffering wife will be the first to tell me about it!

My wife's response to my Dansk dual outlet was "will the car always be this loud?"

When I finally got my 70E cranked, my wife yelled thru the oil smoke, "Its so LOOUUUUDD!"...and I have a stock, single outlet muffler! Okay, after 30 years, maybe the stuffing is burned out, or maybe its just the gender gap! Sounds kool to mee!

Doug, I just ordered a GHL exhaust yesterday. I got the single outlet as well do to valance issues. Instead of getting the test pipe, I just took my Cat off and hollowed the mess out. If you get yours first, let me know how it sounds.

You just need a bigger cat.
No that's not me, just a friend, and his cat. |

Either you have a very small friend, or he has a very large cat.
Somehow I think if you bolted that up between the SSI's and GHL muffler it would be VERY loud. It would probably add an extra scent to the regular Porsche exhaust smells... ------------------ Dan Tolley 1987 911 Coupe http://www.cheaterswayside.com/911/gallery.asp?sort=0&userid=294 |

I think Delbert is right when he says that 30 years of use may have knocked the stuffing out of the muffler!
I had to get noise checked before being allowed out for a track day last year. The limit was a strictly enforced 105dB, which is the limit for club level racing. Where Ducati 996's were measuring 99 to 101 dB, my car was 104dB at 4000 rpm, 5m from the outlet. This is on a stock single outlet system. I am not sure if you have strict noise limits in the US for track days etc, but I now I can't attend the ones aimed at road cars with 98dB limits! |

My 930 has a RUF dual out exhaust. A friend commented:
"That car is about as subtle as an anvil..." I actually thought about using 'ANVIL' as the license tag but ordered my daughter's favorite 'STNKBUG' instead.. Thomas |

Holy Cats! That's a big cat!
Blues legend, Muddy Waters, had a line in one of his songs that went: "....too big to be a housecat, but too small to be a mountain lion..." That about sums up that sucker. I showed the picture to my "girls", and I could see the lust in their eyes ![]() ------------------ Doug '81 SC Coupe (aka: "Blue Bomber") Canada West Region PCA members.home.net/zielke/911SC.htm [This message has been edited by Doug Zielke (edited 04-26-2001).] |

Are the cats the same between the 3.0 and 3.2 motors? I have a line on a used bypass pipe from a Carerra. Will this fit on my SC?

When I removed the exhaust system from my 78 911 SC Targa, the cat was in pieces. The cell closest to the engine had disentigrated causing a restriction. This problem caused loss of power to the engine and backfiring. I knocked it all out, and reinstalled the shell. Still passed emission inspection.
