For the lug holes, I wrap 5 lug nuts in aluminum foil, then put them in place while I spray the wheels. Gets a perfect line, every time.

I know this is an old thread but wanted to ask if anyone suggests a rattle can clear coat over the paint to help with longevity.

I didn't because I wanted it to look more factory. I suppose you can reach out to Wurth and ask them their thoughts.

Clear coats over bare aluminum don't hold up very well. Even OE manufacturers have trouble with this. Take a look at aluminum wheels on cars about 5 years old that live in moist environments, and you'll see the edges and chipped areas starting to get whitish or peel. Once that starts, the corrosion runs under the clear coat, making it worse.

Clear coat over anodized finishes work better, but won't retain the factory finish. A satin clear coat over anodized will look very close to the anodized finish.

Powder-coat clear finishes seem to hold up better, but I don't have direct personal experience to relate. Maybe someone else here does.

A quarter in each lug hole does the trick. The blue tape is easier to work with too.

That is a great tip!!
I've wanted to paint the wheels on my '84 for a while as the black is faded on the outside edges and my search directed me to a couple of threads but I've never heard of your Quarter tip!
Thanks
