Post 930 mods done and dyno'd

I just picked up my 88 930 cab from the shop. It had some of the most common mods done to it. I thought some of you might be interested in what these mods actually do. We first ran a base line run on the dyno. The car was stock except for no cat, Borla muffler and K&N. The car was putting out max hp of 256 at the wheels. We then added B&B headers, k27 turbo, 1 bar spring and Garretson intercooler. The car then dyno'd at 323 max hp at the wheels. Next we installed the controversial Powerflow unit and redyno'd. The Powerflow unit after 5 runs added a max of about 3 hp. I'm trying to return it but the company who sold it says their dyno showed it adds 28 hp to a stock 930. They feel the car was getting hot after multiple runs and that it was giving more hp than if the stock unit was left on. I could end up spending more money in dyno time proving it doesn't work than the unit costs. In conclusion, I really can feel the difference in the car. The turbo comes on sooner and holds more boost longer. I would do the mods again if given the choice.

Thank you for that post! I have done similar mods to my '78 930 motor and also plan a dyno trip after the shakedown. I just got my K27-7200 delivered on Thursday. Those turbos sure are heavy.
The powerflow unit looks like more K&N garbage, only in this case it costs $400. Hope you didn't pay that for it, sorry if you did. I think I'm going to run one of those chinsy looking triangular filters. Sure cleans up the engine bay.
Do you have any idea what HP difference there is in a Euro exhaust vs B&B headers? I am currently running the Euro with all the other mods. I just cannot see $2500 for a set of pipes.

Sorry, I don't have any hard numbers to give you. I would have gone broke if I would have done a dyno run after each change. However, and don't quote me on this, I seem to remember Bruce Anderson saying in his book that all 930's built before 86? would benefit from the headers. Or was it only the cars with the US exhaust? Anyway, every shop I spoke with, even my guy who couldn't sell me the B&B, said the headers were the place to start. I couldn't find any other topic these guys could agree on except this one.

The quote from the Porsche Bible stated that you had to have the ROW or better exhaust before any other mods would work.
I'm just curious as to how much better the headers are than the Euro unit. What I started out with was the full-on California emission exhaust. This was an abomination! Loss of 35+HP over the ROW.
Just by looks alone the header system should be a real performer. The tubes are in the right places.

On Euro exhaust vs B&B headers, when we had a club dyno day recently there was a Euro 930 (85) that was bone stock that pulled 257HP at the rear wheels, my 84 which is bone stock except for B&B headers and single 4" B&B exhaust, pulled 295HP at the rear wheels. That makes me think that the B&B headers is probably better (vs the Euro headers) but to do a complete test on the 85 by bolting on a B&B exhaust, to get the difference that a B&B exhaust alone would give.

Either way, I'm VERY happy that my car came with a complete B&B setup when i bought it

I'm planning to upgrade the intercooler this fall and do another dyno run, I won't be changing the turbo anytime soon (hopefully as it was rebuilt about 2k miles ago.

A 35HP+ gain with headers alone - very impressive. But is it worth the bux, I dunno. We'll see what she pulls on the dyno and go from there.

powerflo never produces real power (see your tests and the euro car dyno tests), and pflo always has a ton of excuses. too hot, too cold, ecu needed to be reset, blah, blah, blah

Hey Rarly. I did some digging around the turbo board some time ago and someone had done some checking on the header stuff. The conclusion was nice, but not neccessary. The post also commented on the change in length to the turbo. Think about exhaust gas velocity and ask yourself what fraction of a second is a few inches going to make. Take the 2K and get a big intercooler first.

ps the out&in was not too bad. I pulled the bumper and used a large transmission jack.

I was wondering how your engine R&R went.
Thanks for the heads up on the headers. Kinda what I was thinking.
I've already got a large B&B intercooler to go along with the ImagineAuto K27-7200, SC cams, and 1.0bar wastegate. All that is left is to make a decision on the fuel pump(s). I'm installing the 930 T-bars and the 930S boost gauge sometime in the next couple of weeks, hopefully the motor will be installed in June.
