I hate filling up
Any solutions for filling up the 911SC without spilling and causing a puddle of gas on account of it venting out? I've had the car for 10 years and fill it the upside down nozzle way, 11:00, all different angles at the lowest setting. I think the new gas nozzles are worsening the problem.
I've replaced all the vent hoses in the trunk, and under the fender to the vapor tank. I've searched the archives for radical solutions. I have not replaced the charcoal canister. Is that the problem? I'm in denial that this car has to be a PIA to fill up and leave an environmental hazard behind. (gas puddle). Thanks for any solution.

I turn the nosel around, sort of the hose is over the trunk lid, It works much better.

I don't even have a charcoal canister or anything fancy. I can tell by ear when its getting pretty full, and ease up. I think I've only overflowed once, and just a few drops at that. Just go slow at the top.

May want to check the metal neck about 8" down with a flash lite I had pin holes in the neck. Shine the lite from up under the fender, in the dark, and peek down the neck. I had to pull the neck out patch it with JB weld.

BTW,
Putting the nozzle in upside down actually mostly defeats the auto shut-off feature on the nozzle. That definitely contributes to the 'puddle'. |

I tried every method mentioned and found that if I insert the nozzle in a few inches and slowly fill it works.
Now lets get to the issue you have with the gas!!!!

On my '77, I just never filled it to the top. I had a gas smell if I did and maybe the puddle. Depended on the nozzle but this was in the '80's. I tried the upside down deal too. Seemed to me this was more to keep from nicking the paint on the rim of the filler flap opening. Rubber flap or no, one has to be careful.

I have an 82 SC that I have only filled up 3-4 times however I have never had this issue? On my 73 with CIS this was always a struggle, I just never filled it to the brim for a while, then I replaced my filler neck, vent tubes disabled the canister and added a one way valve which worked great.
Did they revise the vent system over the years? or on most CIS cars is it the same, I have never really checked out my SC fuel fill area or vents. |

One, that is a frustrating problem for sure.
I can tell you this, I've owned 4 Porsches: one 911SC, and one 3.2 911. I've never had a chronic gas spilling or puddling problem. Something tells me that your problem can be fixed. I even fill the 911SC and the Carrera at Costco, where they have super duper fast pumps, and no spilling. Maybe you can take some pictures of what's going on. I think we can figure this out. |

pull the hoses off the canister & see if it changes anything - if it does, then replace the canister.

I do not have that problem with my '78sc and I fill it all the time. So I would agree that it is not a design issue.
I do hate paying $3.70 a gallon, though! ![]()

I found the best way is to face the handle toward the passenger seat, and still got spill out several times before it's full. yes, I have to stand there holding tie trigger the whole time to release it when it starting to spill. My friend 964 doesn't have this problem.

I have always done this on all my 911s and it works like a charm for me, so you must have a problem somewhere there. I would try pulling the hoses off one by one until the problem goes away and then take it from there. Maybe fill it with the hood up and a temp vent running over the top of the screen?

Try different gas stations, or pumps. I've found over the last 25 years or so, filling the same cars using the same techniques as above (varying the insert angle and depth) that some pumps give me problems and others don't. They all will vary in their delivery rate and some are more sensitive to shutting off than others. The depth of the nozzle insertion into the filler neck is just as important as the angle of the handle with respect to the filler pipe. There is a fairly sharp bend in the filler pipe so I try to insert the pump nozzle in such a way that the flow of gas is in the direction that it needs to go.

I angle the handle towards the driver's mirror and pulled out just a bit (which is my estimate of what JR said). Fill up every time. Never spills.

Upside down works.....
It works because the nozzle follows the contours of the hard gas line between the fill door and the tank. On "normal" cars, doing it right-side up allows the nozzle to (likewise) follow the contour of the hard gas line path.

Ummm, my '79 is a PITA at the newest fastest pumps. I fill it up at half throtle (sp) until its flowing well then listen. Also I know roughly how many (eek) dollars to fill it from near empty so I don't get near the top.
