How much does it cost to do a 914-914/6 conversion?
Thinking of putting either a carb'd 2.4 motor or a 82 CIS SC motor in one.
I know it can be done. Just don't know what to budget. Anyone been there and done that? |
Better to ask on the 914 forum.
|
Do the 3.0...big torque and same conversion cost really as the 2.4. The 914 folks seem to think that it makes sense to go big or go home with /6 conversions since modern Type IV builds are so impressive. Think about it...they are getting a reliable and fairly economical 140 hp from $5000 2056cc engines, virtually plug and play.
|
You can also put a Chevy V8 in there for absolute mayhem.
|
I looked into this for over a year. I discussed it with many knowledgeable 914 folks when I had my 914. $5000 plus the cost of the six. No labor included. That was over 4 years ago.
Yes, take it to the 914 forum for a lot more info. |
Excellence covered the conversion about 8 years ago and the estimate started at about 12-15K depending on upgrades, external oil cooler, dry sum tank, engine mount mods, suspension, brakes etc.
|
I was quoting engine work related expenses only. Yes, a nice 914 conversion to 5 lug and all the goodies associated can run well into the 20's. I had 10K in a 500 dollar car that was pretty solid to begin with. And this was a race car with no interior costs.
|
It was about the same cost of buying a decent 3.0 liter 10 years ago, so I dropped the idea when I started test driving 911s.
|
last car meet I went to a guy had a 914 with a subaru six in it. The suby cost him about a grand and it made around 200 hp. he got the kit from renegade - I know - not porsche - but still an option.
|
If I were to ever do this I'd go the suby route as well. There was a 914 in excellence a while back that had a suby motor. It was one killer 914 in my opinion.
|
How 'bout a 3.2?
Saw a few of these at Ventura Autofest last yr, including the Granite Green 914 w/ suby in it, that made it in Excellence. |
Based on my 911, and some of the stuff I have read in this form, it will cost you the entire budget you had planned, and more that the wife doesn't know about!

$7k and counting, but have done a 'few' bodywork mods in the process;)
An exposed 2.7 with megaphones and Webers right behind your head sure sounds mighty sweet though.... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1205353124.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1205353208.jpghttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1205353597.jpg |
Buy someone elses completed conversion....
Hey mines for sale!! ;) $17K http://www.rudtnersracing.com/914/pocono.jpg 3.2 with webers, Recurved SC dist, MSD short gearbox, rennshift Safety Devices full cage RSR coil overs all around Carrera/Wilwood brakes 7&* real Fuchs on used up A032s. Im sure im forgetting something.. |
I would consider taking on a project. But you guys are offering cars that are a little too extreme for what I am looking for. I am looking for a higher performance street car. 180- 200hp in a fairly stock looking 914 would be fine with me. I want to get groceries with it on the weekend and light it up on some open roads outside of town. Not tow it to a track and wear an asbestos suit ;).

914 $ vs speed
If 180hp and 160 tq will satisfy you, check out Jake Raby's type 4 rebuilds. He posts under the name Notasix, I think. His co is called Raby Aircooled Technology. He has a fairly complete website. I have been agonizing over this same question for my 914 street rat.

MANY combinations to chose from. The best is buy one done. You'll never get out what ya put into it unless it's an original six.

The rule of thumb has always always been 10K
and if you do your own labor that is still a good rule. there are budget guys out there that will tell you stories about 4k conversions. but truth is that by the time they rebuild everything that didn't work right, they still end up closer to 10k many cars go up to 20K but 10K is a good figure if you don't do any other restoration, suspension, interior, paint work and you are only converting over the drive train. the motor is obvious, but most of the parts are unique to a 914 and actually cost more than the 911 equivalents: -throttle set up ($200) -motor oil cooler set up ($300) -oil tank and lines ($1,000) -shift linkage ($200) -motor mount ($400) -headers/heat exchangers ($500/1,500) -unique engine tin work ($400) = $4,000 in rough parts with out the motor, tach, ignition, wiring, induction, mufflers, front oil cooler (1K), etc. the tranny's are pretty safe at 150-200hp, but need upgrades much beyond that. branthttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1205371583.jpg |
I have been agonizing over the same thing myself. I have a 190 hp 73S motor sitting in the garage needing a complete rebuild and 300hp Audi 20V turbo motor too. But looking at the conversion expenses, I cannot go that route. I would go with what Reddog suggests - the Raby, Type 4 hot-rodded motor. The people who have them absolutely rave about them, plus they don't weigh as much as a 6. For less than the conversion costs alone you could have 2 Raby motors and still be way ahead. I would recommend going that way first. If that doesn't do it, drain the bank account or buy a car already converted.
