Toyo R888

Anyone try these tires out yet? Any idea on pricing?

I see them on lots of 911s down here. They may have superceeded the RA1s. I see them on all the spendy toys (GTS RSRs, Turbos) at EC.

Lots of guys in the UK use them, good tyres on track if it's not freezing is the feedback, plus they seem to last quite well and drive fine on the road (if a little noisy).

They have been available for some time now and have not superceded anything as far as I know.

Toyo are just about to release a 245/45 16 for 9s.

I have used them for one season, and found them to be really good. On a warm day after some warm-up laps, they stick really well. Here in Scandinavia a lot of people use them as a wet day solution when they can not run slicks...

This is after half a day track work.

I've run RA1's fpr the past 3 seasons at DE's. If they are better then the RA1's, I'm buying them next season.

I imagine these tires will eventually phase-out the RA-1.

http://marktg.toyotires.com/file/30029.pdf

Doesn't seem practical for Toyo to provide two tires which serve the same purpose to a relatively small market. Small, when compared to typical passenger car tire variety.

That is a great picture to show just how sticky some of the rubber compounds are on various performance type tires. The bad thing about having really sticky tires, is that they do leave a lot of themselves on the track.

Looks like the R888's will indeed be replacing the Toyo RA-1's.
Found this SEMA video.

You'll notice she didn't actually come out and say the RA-1 is being replaced by the R "triple 8" We'll see.

Toyo is phasing these in gradually, which is evident since they don't yet offer all the main sizes. I'll stick with RA-1s for now since they don't make the new ones in the size I need for my 17s.

My Company supplies and fits the Toyo R888's, there is a full size list and tech data sheet in the downloads section, they have been available in the UK for about 3 years now and Toyo have recently introduced a few SG (super grippy)
sizes. I will be fitting a set to my p-car in a few weeks, 225/45 x 17 and 255/40 x 17 just in time for the "dry weather" . To sum up all feedback we've had has been excellent, superb in the dry....but proceed with caution in the wet. The
R888's are road legal in the UK.

Hope this helps

r888's

Is anyone running these on the track? If so, what would be optimum temp and pressure for 97 993 17 inch tires, 225's on the front and 255's on the back? Thanks, Mimi

FWIW:
Last weekend at Thunderhill 80%+ of the guys were running the Proxes RA-1's on their P-cars and a few of the others were running the R888's , most of the other "dedicated" track cars were on slicks...

I would expect in the near future to see more of these, as the guys that did have them really liked them! The majority of the P-cars that were wearing these shoes were short hood guys and the 993/996/997 group and lots of BMW's...

Re~ pressures and temps...well those are the tricks of the trade aren't they?!

Here's the 888s on my '74. Haven't had them out yet. I went with 225s and 235 on 7 & 8 x 15s. I've been running RA1 for the last 3 seasons and love them - good enough for a handful of top time of the day autox wins and as much tire as I really need for test and tune days, if the 888 is any better it's just bonus.

BTW - my one problem with RA1 was their unshaved performance, which I would not do again. However the race tire shop that I got my 888 from suggested I try the 888 unshaved....it was their opinion that the 888 would perform better unshaved than the RA1 unshaved (but obviously still not as good as shaved)

they seem to be mentioned quite often as one of the top tires for running the 'ring.

I have read that they are better in the cold that regular autox tires (Hoosiers, Kuhmos). I agree that they are phasing out the RA-1s, and I believe the typical 205/55-16 and 225/50-16 sizes should be around for at least another year.

I'm looking at the R888s for the Caterham. This got my attention: http://marktg.toyotires.com/file/TireStorage.pdf

Not that it has changed my plans....
