I just purchased a very nice '82 with a complete engine rebuild 4K miles ago - still have the standard 3.0L. The car is arrest me red with a tail, lower front spoiler, and euro height - my wife calls it my little red ho.
Enough history. I am looking for some extra hp/torque. I purchased a cat bypass pipe and bursh muffler which added maybe 10hp. I have seen rebuilt k27s on rennlist and elsewhere for under $1K. I don't need neck snapping power but would like a little more for the straights at Thunderhill and Laguna Seca. I don't want to spend an arm an a leg either. Any suggestions? Anybody out there added a turbo to a regularly aspirated engine? If so, is this much work and really worth it? How about nitrous? Thanks |

"I don't want to spend an arm an a leg either."
Ahh, the golden phrase... I hear it's cheaper to buy a 930 than add one to an SC. Supercharger kits are $5K or so, but they also decrease the life of your motor. If I were you, I would buy a 3.2L and swap it for the 3.0L. Sell the 3.0L, and the upgrade will cost you about $2-$3K. The Motronic motors are good for about 220 or so HP versus the 180 from the SC.. -Wayne |

Or, for a little more, go for a 3.6. With a chip and headers, you can have 283 hp. Lots of torque, too.
Info on the 3.6 Swap. More info on my web page, too. ------------------ Jack Olsen 1973 911 T (3.6) sunroof coupe jackolsen@mediaone.net [This message has been edited by JackOlsen (edited 04-28-2001).] |

Anything can be done - for a price. If you want cheap horse power you've come to the wrong place.
Wayne is right, sell the SC and buy a 930. You'll easily spend more upgrading your SC than the $25-$30K that an early 930 will fetch. All the go fast and stop fast goodies are included in a 930. Right now I (arguably) own the most expensive soon to be turbo SC on the planet. It all starts out so innocently. |

Well,Well,Im a living proof of a LITTLE extra HP,First thing First you are looking at a arm a leg and then some more and more after that,my proyect is a 3.2 that i turbocharge six months later is feels slow to modified this cars the COST is absurb ask some of the other guys that are into this proyects, best thing to do is enjoy as is other than that is money, money and more money and you still will get beat by the rx-7s,supras,just to mention a few, nitrous a good solution but you must have some cash just in case the mix goes bad of course there will be other opinios so lets see, just my share.

Thanks everyone. Looks like I'll enjoy the SC, save up a little more money, sell the SC and then buy either a '78 or '79 930.

Rarly8, We're gonna have to compare reciepts on the SC/Turbo swap! Between the two of us, we could've bought and shared a GT2, I'm sure!!

But, if you bought a GT-2, you would just have another generic melted-wax styled car that looks like a Mitsubishi to oncoming traffic!!!

Very hard decisions have been made to keep this project going. The common denominator that keeps it alive is the basic SC platform. No power ANYTHING, and no sunroof. I've got to re-weigh the car, but I'm guessing 2500 pounds. This gives a power to weight ratio of around 7:1 with my modified engine. Not too shabby. All the needed 930 items can or have been added, and I like my low gear 5 speed. Don't know how long it will last, but I still like it.
The 996 GT2 is cool, but not something I would want to work on. I can easily work on this car, and I really like that. Resale value can never be a consideration for anyone doing these sort of "upgrades". |
