According to Waynes Book:

1970 911E-C

620 0001= 911/01, 2195cc (2.2), 9.1:1 cr, MFI, 155hp@6200, 191tq@4500 rpm

620 8001= 911/04 sportomatic, specs as above

he's probably referring to the 101 Projects for your 911, written by Wayne Dempsey, owner of Pelican.
Check the "Publications" section on the home page and you'll find it.
Another good book for deciphering engine numbers, trans, VIN's etc, etc is the Porsche Red Book which is available through Amazon.com

The "101 projects" IS a must own...but it doesn't include the detail specifics of " How to Rebuil and Modify Porsche 911 Enginges 1965-1989" by Wayne Dempsey

This book has all the specs for every engine in a 911 for those years, with detailed specs and tips, must do's etc.

IMHO every 911 owner HAS to own in addition to the Bentley manual these 2 books by Wayne
I just wish I'd bought mine sooner!

620 8001= 911/04 sportomatic.

Does the 8 always mean Sportmatic?

Thanks for the help on this!

In Waynes "How to rebuild and modify 911 Engines"

For model years 1970-1971, there is a commonality between Sportomatic and the "04" engine # and the serial # "8" but only for these years...

So I guess you could say yes there is a connection....

Your welcome! Once I bought mine I don't know how I lived w/out it...there is SOOO much knowledge in there...I went thru it with a high lighter and post-it's and tagged the relevent stuff for my 911..It also influenced my next build as there is a compolation of modified engine builds that's just facinating..
You'll not be able to put it down the first time you put your hands on it...lol

Enjoy
