i have a 1976 911 targa 2.7. i also have the clymer manual (65-78) and the haynes manual.i am trying to seperate engine/transaxle.the manuals say to use spacers and an allen screw.the pictures appear to show a spacer fitting around the pressure plate hole/threaded bolt.i took a 1/4in. compression nut and drilled the inside.i then took a dremel tool and rounded the outside.it fit around the pressure plate bolt pretty good. i took a m6-12 allen bolt and threaded it into the pressure plate bolt. i then tightened it down. all i managed to do was strip the pressure plate bolt. could someone out there advise an idiot who didn't consult first on the proper way to seperate the eng/trany

BMB,
The procedure you used was only intended for use on the 1970-71 transaxle! For the 915 transaxle, what you have to do is use a snap-ring tool and remove the retaining ring for the lever that attaches to the clutch cable--shown as #3 on p. 121 of your Haynes manual. Once the splined lever shaft #6 for the throwout fork is free, rotate the shaft so the fork rotates toward the engine ... pull the engine apart slightly, then rotate the fork clear of the throwout bearing, and the engine will be free to come completely apart! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

![]() I read the haynes manual before i tried seperating my 75 motor and tranny and once I had removed the starter and the other motor to tranny bolts it just came apart and as I seperated it the throw out bearing fork just slid off the end of the release bearing.I don't know what years you need to use the bolts and bushings but my 75 didn't need them. The release bearing stayed with the preasure plate and when I put it back together I just slid the fork back onto the bearing as I pushed the tranny back towards the motor.Hope this helps you. ------------------ Grant 75 911s targa |
