1974 911

can someone explain to me the difference between the different US spec 911s offered in 74?
There seems to be a odd number of various "cross-over" models with diff power specs and engine specs for that year.
I was browsing a wiki to look at the differences in teh evolution of the 911 and it seems things get wonky right about when they switched body styles in 74.

Yes, they like to do that. My '84 is the same way.

Marc,
Don't rely on a wiki for solid information - get hold of Paternie's Porsche 911 Red Book which has reliable data !

Cheers,
Dennis.

yeah, i just said wiki but other info i found also mentioned the different specs for the 74s. Some have the 73 RS engine in it ans some are the detuned 160 hp version etc...
any insights?

If you plan on staying in Cali, then the '74 is smog exempt. Go big!

1974 standard 911 : narrow body, black engine shroud, small port cis motor (145-150 hp
?) , small M front calipers 4 or 5 speed as ordered
911S USA: narrow body, green engine shroud, larger port cis motor
(165 hp) S alloy calipers, 4 or 5 speed as ordered
911 Carrera USA: 8" rear flares (early ones had RS flares from 73 model, then switched over to the thinner flange as seen since then thru 89 on Carrera's) , same motor as the 911S CIS, same suspension, 5 speed, Standard 6/7 fuchs- optional 7/8 x 15 fuchs
911 Carrera ROW: Same as usa except 911/83 motor mfi 210 hp (73 RS engine)

this is from memory, so i cannot confirm the euro 911S as having the 911/83 motor or not

HA! wow, no wonder it's so confusing.
thanks dave (TRE)
and slodave - lol, i need another Pcar like i need another wife.. ;-)

Just saw a cool 74 and the guy was a little vague about the specs and details of it. Nice car with a crazy full $13k k (not a typo) total engine rebuild. The sound was amazing.

Only the "S" models had the green shroud?

Hmm. I wonder if mine is an "S" then. AFAIK it's the original engine shroud and it's green. I think there's a way to check the engine by serial # but I'll have to do some digging. That'd be kinda' cool.

My "standard" '74 911 has the black engine shroud (150HP) with 5 speed but has S calipers up front, front and rear sway bars and Konis. Base 74 911's in particular seem to be all over the place in how they are equipped based on some previous discussions.

Actually not that crazy for a quality rebuild by a mechanic (vs. doing it yourself). 2.7s require more case work during a rebuild than most other 911 engines.
