83 SC won't start
I put the engine back in today after chasing a oil leak and I can't get it to fire. There's power to lights, radio, etc...but when I turn the key all I get is a "humming" sound and it won't turn over. I checked the battery, it's good (it sat for 6 months) and I have double and triple checked all connections...any ideas? I'm stumped...going to have beer and clear my head for a while.
thanks. Wayne C. 83 SC |

if you are getting a humming when you turn the key, chances are your starter pinion gear can't fully extend. There is a safety switch in the starter motor that wont let it crank until the pinion is extended, engaging with the flywheel. The starter motor may be loose or not mounted so that it allows the pinion to clear. You might try turning the crankshaft pulley with a socket wrench a few turns, and try it again.

There are two yellow wires going to the starter. If you reverse these, then the starter won't run.
If the starter is running but the engine does not turn (just a whirrrrring sound), then the ring gear was not placed back onto the pressure plate when the PP was changed.

Starter Wiring for SC.........
Wayne,
The SC cars began using the three (3) terminal starters compared to '74-'77 911 with only two (2) terminal starters. The picture below is what Superman was referring. You could have easily interchanged the connection when you plugged the wires. HTH. ![]() Tony |
