tire valve decoration

i see this stuff almost every day. see those marks on the wheel under the stem? that cap beats on the wheel at freeway speeds. just 60mph will do it. this is a RUF wheel with a bit less clearance that a fuchs, and fuchs do it too. get those heavy decorative caps and chrome sleeves off and use a plastic cap and/or get some stick on supports. pushing it with your finger will show that it takes a bit of effort to contact the rim, and that can lead to rubber fatique/cracking and a sudden loss of pressure. check yours.

Better than the stick on supports are the threaded, solid stems you can buy at the local auto parts stores like Pep BoyZ. That's one thing I like about the cheesy 80's BBS RS wheels I have. The solid valve stems are very nice.

Thanks for the tip. I'll check mine today, I sure wouldn't want sudden deflation at speed.

BMW makes a neat little metal valve stem cap. It's unobtrusive, weighs next to nothing and has a small o-ring inside for a good seal to the valve stem. It's much better than the cheapo plastic caps and our host sells them.

Another thing to consider is the age of the valve stems. We had a guy in a 930 suffer a deflation in a front tire on a run last year, as a result of a very old stem cracking and finally letting go at speed, as the thing deflected. He was also missing the stick-on valve stem supports that he should have had.

Mine get changed with every set of new tires.

I don't have a picture handy, but my Fuchs have a "support thingy" to prevent the valve stem from doing just that. Is that something they added later on?

The supports are 965-361-561-00-OEM. PP sells them for $5.75 each.

Thanks for the heads up, John.

I have metal valve stems on all of my race wheels. My Fuchs do not have the little supports, but those are great for street use. For dedicated track or race wheels, I would highly recommend metal valve stems.

I lost a race in my 944 a while ago because one of those supports let go while on track.

Nothing but metal valve stems for the race car now.

The official Porsche ones are very thin, very light aluminum, like the photo just above this one. The 959 has special ones that have a rubber rim around them to prevent them from marring the rim...
