Post L6 vs 996 Bang for Buck!

I may just loose a few comrades here but....
Picked up my Suburban after service at local dealer and test drove a new Vette!.
And y'know what! having been fortunate enough to blast a new 996 turbo and a new vette i feel qualified to make a few comparisons like value for money.
Of Course if money was no option there would be no arguement.
But there seems a lot of people on the site pouring huge sums of money into their P cars and producing meagre horsepower/torque/reliability.
Me for one has spent $8-9k in 1 1/2 yrs with the car not the most reliable.
I must come clean and admit I was impressed with the vette, it options and value for money, coupled with Chevy reliability.
Don't get me wrong,I love my go-cart feeling 911 but hate having to dig so deep into my pocket every month!.
I is seeming more logical for me to own an American sports car whilst in the states and save my dream car for when I return to Europe in a few years!.
I may not be 'straying from the flock' but just taking some time out!.
....Anyone wanna 86 Cabrio?

LOL - the Porsche / Ferrari / Chevy / Ford loyalty thing makes me laugh! I love to drive. Period. The tool of choice does not impress me because of what it is, or its history, or how it looks. How it behaves, and how closely that behavior matches my driving technique makes for loving a car.

Hell, I am thinking VERY seriously about selling my 77 S and building a flared 916 (that’s a 914 / 6 for those of you in Palm Beach County, Florida) with a hot rod 3.0 and 915, 911 front suspension etc. I could care less what others think. I answer to no one but me

Go forth and do what many are incapable of: enjoy yourself!!!

Cool

I do agree with you that a Corvette is an excellent value in a sports car. BUT...keep in mind you were comparing (above) a brand new Vette to your 14 year old 911. If you were comparing a 14 year old Vette, I have a feeling you may find your 911 equally if not more reliable. We all know the "quality" products GM produced in the 80's.

But, when comparing the 996 to a Vette (the turbo is a streach) the Vette is a slightly better value for the money. I feel like if you were comparing a 993 to a Vette I would staunchly support the 993...but a 996? Thats where I may start to like the Vette a little more because the 996 is more of a homogonized sports car and with fewer endearing and unique qualities (Let the flames begin for that statement!)

Nick.

There's never been a doubt about the numbers.
It's like the Viperkiller says: What do you like? What makes you feel good? I've had a bunch of all of them. Vettes do have super power and the handling. The powertrain engineers have done one heck of a fantastic job putting together a great package. However, the feel, at least of the previous generations, just wasn't me. The P cars are also fabulous, but they too are straying from the involvement and sheer entertainment that the early S cars in particular exuded. Right now I am considering rebuilding a wrecked competition 348 for the street with some my own outlaw mods. However, I'm wondering if an old Alfa GTV or GTV6 wouldn't be more fun with those minor modifications (for a bit less in first and running costs.) (Old P cars are basically nonexistant here in the Emirates.) The light weight of the earlier cars has just been lost to too many compromises for cushiness.

Only a couple things out there that would make me stray, one is a Cobra kit and the other is a Spyder kit.

These Vettes have come a long way, but I'm still disappointed with the cheap level of trim. Granted, 996s have taken a turn for the worse as well, but that Vette (and Viper too for that matter) still feels like a meat-head's car.

LOL... a meatheads car! That is far too funny.

I have loved the Porsches forever and will continue to do so, but the 996 isn't a 911. Sorry. Its a horse of a different colour all together. Porsche says it themselves, its the only '911' that doesn't share one piece from previous models. Perhaps a truer version of the 911 is the turbo 996 because it retains its aircooled bottom end.... ANYWAYS, compare the 993 to a brand-spankin' new vett and I'll take the 993 any day, for value and joy of driving. Give me the 996 for the grocery getter and winter beater.

On a different note, Anyone hear that Jerry Seinfeld publicaly stated that he didn't like the look of the 996 and that he would be sticking with his 993? I think PCNA gave him a 996 to try and instead of giving it back just wrote a check, guess there must be somethign about it.

oops! the L6 was meant to read Z6,
anyway,
My dream car is still a Porsche, but one I can work on and have as a track/Hill Climb car in the UK. There I will have my own dream garage to work on my own car and not be 'fleeced' by rip-off mechanics (sorry to the honest mechanics amongst you )
The dream car will be based upon a 964 Carrera 4 but will be stripped lightweight but have a full roll cage for safety. The engine will be heavily modified and possibly Supercharged for that extra umph!.
In '911 Porsche world' magazine, UK prices for Porsche and Porsche spares are Very Low! i.e. 1990 c4 56k miles $19.000, 1994 993 42k miles $36,000 !! US Dollars!!!
As for the 86ragtop, she will be appreciated this summer in Long Island NY, whilst I seriously concider either a standard Vette or a Z6.
