PO mentioned my 87 carrera had the timing advanced slightly along with a chip and stainless exhaust.
Questions: What does advancing the timing accomplish? Does this need to be taken into account when adjusting the valves? Does this effect idle speed? Mine runs when warm at about 1000RPM. I know its about 80RPM to high and will lower once I get into Bentley, but do I need to adjust timing in consideration of RPM? TIA - Michael |

The chip increases HP. I have one for my 84 and it boasts a 20 or so increase. It doesn't change the valve adjust, and shouldn't have anything to do with the idle speed.
Interestingly enough, the one thing Not covered in Bentley is the idle adjustment. In fact, the proper adjustment method is given the Hayness 911 manual. It requires shorting a circuit in the engine bay and turning the adjustment screw on the air flow meter. ------------------ Kurt B '84 Carrera Cab. carrera_cabriolet@yahoo.com |

Advancing the timing will give you improved bottom end torque (ie stop light drag racers) at the cost of decreased top end (high RPM) power.
I don't think this affects your valve adjustment It should not affect your idle speed appreciably. You probably need to set your "base idle" as Kurt describes. Nick. ------------------ _ _ __ _ _ Nick Shumaker 1982 911SC Coupe nickshu@yahoo.com PCA -- Rocky Mtn. Region |
