HELP needed in backdating a...66 shorthood SWB !!!
Hello,
this is for the backdating experts... We have chosen a 1966 912 swb (ofcourse!!!) that was converted to a 965 wide short hood model some time ago, to re-convert to a long hood 73 RS replica.... (pls don't ask why...) What type of front wings (fenders) should we use ? We preffer metal ones with the appropriate light/ indicator buckets. Does anyone make these ? What about the rear ones ? Shall we use stadard SC rear wings (quarter panels?) How can these be installed since the car is swb ? Has anyone done a swb 73RS replica ??? PLEASE HELP and don't mention cost .... THANKS IN ADVANCE art |

The front SWB (65-68) fenders are different than the LWB (69-73) fenders. The early fenders are not flared and the turn signal area is different.
The SC flares are different than RS flares as well, SC flares have a constant width flat edge all the way around (not the lip but the flat vertical face). On an RS flare the flat edge tapers toward the ends. Do you want to go with metal parts or fiberglass? Generally metal parts will be found used. The hood can be found in fiberglass new or it can be bought used in metal. Did the person who did your conversion change the hood latch to a short hood too? You may need to change it back or buy one of the fiberglass long hoods designed for use with the short hood latch panel (TRE sells them I believe). I have two metal long hoods for sale but you should figure out which latch panel you have. You can find the 69-73 fenders used or you can buy fiberglass replicas. The replicas seem to need the headlight buckets from a set of metal fenders. I'm not sure where you can buy RS flares in metal but the SC flares are usually close enough for people. If you want a metal RS rear bumper it'll be hard to find. You may want to check out GT Racing or TREmotorsports.com as they have all of the fiberglass parts you'll need, fenders, bumpers, etc..

Hello Jess, and thanks for your email.
do you happen to have any 73 front metal fenders ? how hard is it to convert the SC fenders to 73s and install the front indicators ? How do I know which hood latch I have ? Are the rear SC fenders bolt on ? (I mean weld on ...) |

Art911,
If you are welding new quarter on and you use any quarter panel from 69 on, the wheel arch is different due to your car being a swb. If you look at the torsion bar location on the early cars it is very close to the edge of the fender lip. Something to consider. |

Here is a nice long hood for sale from joeyjudge
Same guy has a set of SWB fenders for sale And this is the stuff I have for sale Here's a sample of the backdate parts available for late cars. Check out this thread, it has a lot of answers for you ![]() Another great thread with input from Dave at TRE.Dave explains the early/late latch panel issue and how he dealt with it on the creation of the TRE long hood adapted for use on a short hood car. This is a naked early car ![]() And a naked later car ![]() You can see there is a significant difference in the front latch area.
