On a 76 911S that had tapping from cylinder #3, the two exhaust head studs were loose. We tightened them and now there is oil smoke from the exhaust pipe and the same tapping sound at high rpm. The intake head studs have not been checked. What would cause oil smoke by tightening two head studs on cylinder #3?

Theory:
Bad valve guides and/or loose lifter. You didn't notice the smoke before because it was blowing past the case-to-manifold junction. Now that you tightened it, removing the exhaust leak, you still hear the loose lifter and the burning oil smoke just gets blown out the tailpipe. Just a theory anyway. . .

False alarm...the car was sitting for a couple of weeks and the smoked stopped after a few minutes of driving. However, the tapping is still happening. The next step is to check the top side cylinder studs.
Thanks for the theory POP...the loose lifter may be causing the tapping sound. Can those be tightened without dropping the engine?
