1968 911 ID question
Can someone tell me if all non "T" or "E" 911's were therefore 911L's by default? This question pertains to 1968 US cars exclusively.
The badges on my car read only "911" both inside and out. No "L", "T" or otherwise... That said, there is a "leaded" S bumper on the car and some other indications that it is trimmed like an S (deco sizing for example). I thought the car was a "USA Coupe". Now I'm not sure. Does anyone know what owner's manual would be appropriate for the car? Many, many thanks! |

Maybe start the process with VIN and engine #'s...that way we can decode those and you'll have a good idea what you really have...unless I'm missing something

The '68 911L had the S trim. All '68 911s had the lead weights in the front bumper.

OK, there are two categories of ’68 models: USA and RoW. This is the first year for such distinction.
First ‘68 RoW (Rest of World): 912, 4-cylinder Type 616/36 engine, basic trim level, available with ‘European’ heat exchangers. 911 (normal), 130 hp Type 901/06 engine, basically 912 trim level but could be optioned close to a 911S. 911L with the ‘normal’ 130 hp 901/06 engine but otherwise equipped as a 911S. 911S with the 160 hp Type 901/02 engine and full trim level, 5 ½ x 15 Fuchs standard. 911T with a down-rated 110 hp Type 901/03 engine, introduced with basic trim level. Now for ’68 USA spec cars: All the USA cars had an air pump. 912 USA, 4-cylinder Type 616/39 engine, basic trim level. 911 USA (normal) 130 hp Type 901/14 engine, basically 912 trim level but could be optioned close to a 911L. 911L USA with the ‘normal’ 911 USA 130 hp 901/14 engine but trim similar to 911S (RoW) The 911S 160 hp Type 901/02 and 911T 110 hp Type 901/03 were not available for USA delivery. All 911s were available with Sportomatic transmissions. During the ’68 model year there was the transition from aluminum crankcase sand castings to ‘Elektron’ magnesium pressure castings. The ’68 is the last SWB. Best, Grady

Grady, wow! I never knew you couldn't buy a 911T in the USA in 1968.

Well, it looks like i owe Grady at least 12 bucks. Thank you very much for all of the replies and the generosity of their insight. It seems as though the car I've got is indeed a straight USA 911, not an L. Now, the bonus question: is there such a thing as a non L owner's manual and if so, how the hell does one find it? Looked at Porsche's website and found listings for "T" "S" and "L" cars for this year. Anyone have an idea as to what my car would have been delivered with manual-wise?
With continued gratitude and respect! |

1968 print date Factory reprint
Here is the factory reprint from IV-68. Publication #4606.20 it had a part number of W42607142-1 it might still be in the Porsche parts system - check with a local Porsche dealer.
Some of the info is invaluable...like the exploded photo of the alt nut and fan belt with the call out for 5 spacers...find that info someplace else.... (I must have looked off an on for two weeks for that number of shims in the tech manual and parts book). That fold out color electrical layout is priceless. Bob ![]() ![]() |
