Angry Carrera hesitation / rough idle

My 84 911 has developed a rough idle and hesitation/surge/oscillation at low RPM (1500-3000) at part throttle. It pulls like a freight-train when floored, but part throttle is terrible. It hesitates when accelerating from a start to the point of being annoying. I've replaced: plugs, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, O2 sensor. I've done: Prof. valve adjustment, torqued the intake manifold, checked for vacuum leaks as best I could, ohm'ed out the plug wires, done a compression / leak down test...HELP! What is left? It ran pretty good this winter, still hesitating a little but not too bad after the Fall valve adj. Now, though, it is getting worse.

Check air flow meter. It happened to me 2 years ago. Rough idle. Check everything including vacuum leak before it's replaced. A new air flow meter solved the problem after all. May be borrow one from a friend to see if that's the problem.

Question

I've heard the same symptoms caused by a fuel pump with lower than spec'ed pressure.

pull off one injector plug at a time and see if any one cylinder is not pulling it's weight at idle. you could pull plug wires to do this at the risk of a shock. carreras have two intake gaskets on either side of an insulator block, and occasionally one is blown out on the head side, causing a dead hole at idle. the intake nuts are usually looser than they should be, and should be checked at tuneup time. 930s have the same loose intake problem. just another thing to check.
