Quick Q for 1984-89 Carrera Owners...

Hi guys. I need a quick favor. On the passenger side seat belt of a US-model 1984-89 Carrera, when you pull the seat belt all the way out, and then let it back, does it click and lock like modern seat belts? I.E. Pull the seat belt all the way out until the end. Then let it back about 1 ft. Then try to pull it out again. Can you do this?

On my 959 (European car), the seat belt doesn't work this way, and I'm trying to fit my kid's child seat to the 959. Doesn't look like it will fit in the back, so the front will have to do. But, the seat belt doesn't lock like normal belts here - I'm trying to figure out if I can order a belt and swap it out before the weekend (taking him and the car to CA Festival of Speed). I don't have a 1984-89 Carrera floating around here, and I've never checked this feature previously.

Your help is appreciated,

Thanks,

Wayne

I see this on the web, I have one of these too:

Quote:
Some vehicle lap and shoulder belts pull and retract freely, with no locking mechanism. A locking-clip allows you to clip together the lap and shoulder portions of a seatbelt, and helps prevent the seat belt from becoming loose before a crash. This will fix the lapbelt at one length to hold a carseat. The locking clip is always installed on the side of the carseat near the buckle, no more than one inch away.
I would just prefer a locking seat belt installed in the car anyways...

I'll be glad to check when I get home (if someone doesn't reply before then) and can let you know what I find in a couple of hours...I'll get back.

89 Cab, U.S. (Calif); Pulled passenger seat belt all the way out, then let about a foot back in, no clicks. Tried everything, no clicks.

Wayne,

My 84 does not lock out like modern seat belts. Tried many different positions but no lockout. Hope it truly works off inertia like its supposed too. I know this isn't what you wanted to hear; sounds like a modern upgrade seatbelt may be in your near future.

Nope. But you can get it to lock if you give it a quick tug.

I thought the lock mechanism works once sudden inertia is present. I sometimes strap a child seat in the front, the shoulder belt gets "locked" in place at the point of the seat. Depending on your child seat I guess, but I think they all have it.

My belts also only lock with a tug on them.

There is a metal clip that you can place on the belt that will lock the child seat in place if I remember correctly....been a while since I needed them.

no lock on my '88 but, as others have noted, it does not take a very quick pull to get it to lock...really a PITA when you are trying to reach into the floor board to pick something up and you have to SLOWLY lean over.

Just to be clear, in order to engage the full lock, you have to pull the seat belt *all the way out* to the end of the belt until it stops. Then let it back, and see if it will lock. From what I can tell, none of them do this, which makes sense, since the 959 used just about all 911 parts on the inside. I was just wondering if there was maybe a Euro / USA difference.

Thx,

Wayne

My 88 has one of those locking tabs in the glove box to lock a seat belt on a child seat.

Wayne, we have all done that. These belts are not designed that way.

Just for reference, the front seat belts in my Pontiac Grand Prix don't work that way, but the back ones do. Being that my '87 Porsche is older, makes sense that front seat belts wouldn't lock either.

No clicks, but you can buy a seat belt clip that straps on to the existing seat belt and adjust it to make it firm according to your child's size.
