Bottom end rebuild update

Well, I know the gear on the layshaft will need to be replaced but I assembled the bottom end today including crank, layshaft/oil pump. I lightly lubed the bearings with asy. lube and torqued everything down. I am doing this as per the recomendation to rotate the crank and check for any binding.
Boy was I suprised....
turned just as easy as you please...guess I was expecting more resistance. Case has been hot tanked....just waiting on payday to send my crank to the machine shop for mag. and micropolish. Then my con rods are off to EBS for measurement and bushings. DavidH seems pretty certain that I can refit the layshaft gear myself so I might try that.

I'm getting real excited now!
Case looks so nice! All new hardware and stuff!

I also measured my oil pressure relief valve springs...
too short I think...under 70mm... but I can't seem to find where I got that spec from it's not in the Performance handbook or my factory spec book. i might just replace them for good measure.

One wierd thing is the fact that one spring is just short of 2.75 in. and the other is almost 3.5 in.


what gives?

Leland, make sure you clean out your crank real well when it comes back from polishing. I used spray carb cleaner and compressed air to make sure there was nothing left in the oil passages.

I'm sure you will find the update on the relief springs somewhere in your Volume 3, Section 1 of the service manuals, but there are two different springs, the short one is the original spec of 69-70 mm, and the one with the guide inside is 86 mm, if I remember correctly. Wouldn't hurt to replace both.

Have you measured the cylinder heights on all of your cylinders? The 'leaky' one may be a bit shorter, or the deck surface where it mates with crankcase may be a bit lower than the rest.

Here's a shot of the case with crank installed for a trial fit. Looks so much better after the hot tank.

Warren, I'm sending the cylinders to EBS and they will handle that for me. And thanks for the tip on cleaning the crank!
